The Foundation for Prader-Willi Research (FPWR) is dedicated to supporting research to advance the understanding and treatment of Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and Schaaf-Yang syndrome (SYS). We invite applications for funding on an annual or semiannual basis, in response to a Request for Applications.
FPWR accepts applications in all areas of research relevant to PWS and SYS, but we are particularly interested in supporting projects that will lead to new interventions to alleviate the symptoms associated with PWS and SYS. A more detailed description of FPWR’s funding priority areas is available.
FPWR accepts applications from academic, government, non-profit or for-profit research entities from within and outside the United States. Academic research applicants should have a primary faculty appointment at the level of Instructor or higher. This grant program will be useful for junior faculty in the early stages of their careers, established investigators in other areas of research who wish to enter the field of PWS or SYS research, or investigators in the PWS or SYS fields who are seeking funding to support pilot studies in a new area of PWS or SYS research. FPWR seeks to support innovative, high-risk/high reward research in its early stages. Application instructions from the most recent RFA are found here: Request for Applications
The Foundation for Prader-Willi Research (FPWR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting research to advance the understanding and treatment of Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and Schaaf-Yang syndrome (SYS), announces the availability of funds to support innovative PWS and SYS research. FPWR is particularly interested in supporting projects that will lead to new treatments to alleviate the symptoms associated with PWS and SYS. A full description of FPWR's funding priorities can be found here. Briefly, funding priority areas include:
Funds Available: Applicants may request up to $150,000 USD in direct costs for the initial 18 months of support, with the possibility of a second grant period of 18 months of funding upon competitive renewal. Indirect costs of up to 8% are allowed. Applicants may choose to request a smaller budget and/or shorter duration, for example, for a higher risk / highly innovative project.
Application Guidelines: All LOIs and applications are to be submitted on-line through ProposalCentral (https://proposalcentral.altum.com/). The LOI is limited to a 2-page description. Full grant proposals are limited to a 5-page research plan. Guidelines and instruction can be found on Proposal Central. Review considerations, and a list of currently funded projects, can all be found through the links below.

The Foundation’s overarching mission is to eliminate the challenges of Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) through research and therapeutic development. Successful applications clearly align with this mission and speak directly to one or more of FPWR’s priority research areas:
Genotype → phenotype mechanisms of PWS
Neurobiology of hunger/feeding, behavior, and metabolism
Neurobiology of cognition/mental health in PWS
Clinical care research/clinical interventions
Therapeutics development, including genetic approaches, novel or repurposed drugs, devices to treat PWS symptoms
👉 Success predictor: Focusing your project on areas the Foundation explicitly lists increases relevance in scientific and advocate review.
FPWR explicitly states they seek innovative, high-risk/high-reward projects — especially those likely to lead to new interventions that alleviate core PWS symptoms rather than incremental findings.
Success predictors include:
Novel hypotheses that could transform understanding of PWS biology
Projects that could lead to therapies, repurpose existing drugs, or improve clinical outcomes
Studies that open new lines of investigation in PWS research
Proposals are reviewed by scientific experts on scientific merit, meaning the study must demonstrate:
Clear research questions or hypotheses
Strong rationale grounded in existing knowledge
Sound methodology appropriate to the discipline
Feasibility within the proposed timeline and budget
Success predictor: A solid research design with appropriate methods, statistical planning, and realistic milestones.
In addition to scientific review, an advocate reviewer evaluates how well the proposed work will matter to people affected by Prader-Willi or Schaaf-Yang Syndrome (SYS) — this means:
Projects explaining why the work matters for patients and families
Clear descriptions of clinical or quality-of-life implications
Lay summaries that convey community impact effectively
👉 Success predictor: Demonstrating relevance in both scientific and patient-centered terms improves chances of funding.
Eligibility is generally broad but includes an expectation that applicants have:
A primary faculty appointment (Instructor or higher) — useful for early-career through senior researchers
Capability to execute the project
Openness to multidisciplinary collaboration, where appropriate
Success predictors:
Investigator expertise relevant to PWS research (or strong rationale for entering the field)
Including collaborators or mentors with complementary skills for high-impact work
Currently funded or established track record improves competitiveness
FPWR uses a two-stage process (LOI → Full application). Both stages are judged on predictable criteria: innovation, impact, feasibility, relevance, and fit with FPWR priorities.
Best practices that support success:
Concise, compelling LOI that shows significance and feasibility
Clear specific aims and hypotheses
Strong preliminary data where available (especially for novel areas)
Budget that matches scope (max often ~US $150 k over 18 mo)
Though FPWR doesn’t publish a formal rubric, rare disease research funders (like FPWR) generally weigh similar dimensions:
Scientific merit and feasibility
Innovation and transformative potential
Relevance to the affected community or clinical care
Investigators’ potential to complete the work successfully
Quality of narrative and communication to both specialists and advocates
| Predictor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Alignment with FPWR priority topics | Ensures relevance to mission and community goals |
| Innovative, high-impact ideas | Increases reviewer interest and funding priority |
| Strong scientific merit and design | Critical in scientific review |
| Relevance to the PWS community | Advocate reviewers value clear impact on patients |
| Qualified investigator/team | Ensures feasibility and execution |
| Well-written, compliant proposals | Avoids administrative rejection and clarifies merit |
FPWR accepts applications from academic, government, non-profit or for-profit research entities from within and outside the United States. Principal Investigators must have a primary faculty appointment at the level of Instructor or higher. This grant program will be useful for junior faculty in the early stages of their careers, established investigators in other areas of research who wish to enter the field of PWS/SYS research, or investigators in the PWS/SYS field who are seeking funding to support pilot studies in a new area of PWS/SYS research. FPWR seeks to support innovative, high-risk/high reward research, and supports research internationally.
Application Review and Award: Letters of intent (LOI) will be reviewed for innovation and potential impact, merit and relevance to the mission of FPWR. Selected LOIs will be invited to submit a full grant proposal.
Full grant proposals meeting the technical requirements will be reviewed on the basis of merit by scientific reviewers with expertise in the research area. An advocate reviewer will evaluate the relevance of the proposed research to the PWS and/or SYS community. Final funding decisions will be based on scientific merit, relevance and the suitability of the research with respect to the programmatic goals of FPWR.
