Working with our local communities to sow the seeds of change.
We are committed to supporting the communities that we work and live in. That is why we created the Ford Britain Trust. Since April 1975 we have been able to help fund the education and advancement of our neighbours.
We pay special attention to projects focusing on education, environment, children, people with disabilities, youth activities and projects that provide clear benefits to the local communities close to our UK locations. The Ford Britain Trust particularly encourages applications supported by Ford employees, but is open to all, provided that the qualifying organisations meet our selection criteria.
We have five cycles each year for grant donations.
Small grant applications, up to £250, are welcomed three times a year during:
1st April to 30th June for review in July
1st August to 31st October for review in November
1st December to 28th February for review in April
Large grant applications, up to £3,000, are welcomed twice a year during:
1st March to 31st July for review by our Board of Trustees in September/October
1st September to 31st January for review by our Board of Trustees in March
All applicants will be informed of the outcome following the review.
Please note: Applications received after these dates will not be accepted and will, instead, be put forward for inclusion in the next application cycles.
These are things that seem to make a grant more likely to get funded, drawn from “tips from previous applicants,” what Ford Britain Trust emphasises, and attributes of successful / well-advertised grants.
| Predictor | What It Looks Like / Why It Helps |
|---|---|
| Benefit to local community / environmental benefit | Projects that clearly show how they will improve the local area (e.g. schools, playgrounds, disabled access, environment, green spaces). If the project is “local,” tangible, and visibly beneficial, it tends to get priority. |
| Projects involving young people / children | Activities that support children/schools/youth are explicitly among Trust priorities. Such projects often align well with the Trust’s mission. |
| Support for disabled / special educational needs | Projects targeted to help people with disabilities or special needs are looked upon favourably. |
| Organisational eligibility & presentation of finances | Being a properly constituted charity / non-profit, supplying recent reports and accounts (especially for large grants) helps. Budgets / quotations for needed equipment, proper documentation. |
| Being within Ford priority geography | Organisations nearer to Ford’s UK sites tend to get higher weighting / priority. So living or operating in those priority areas helps. |
| Connection with Ford employees | If the applying organisation has some link to present / past Ford employees, that seems to help (e.g. via endorsement or inclusion of the employee’s ID). This is noted as “a tip from a previous successful applicant.” |
| Matching the grant size & project scale | Proposals that match the size of grant allowed; not over-ambitious. For example, asking for large equipment purchases only if it’s justified; small grant requests that are modest and well detailed tend to fare well. |
| Clear explanation of capital vs operational cost | The Trust gives preference to capital expenditure rather than paying for core running or operating costs. Demand to show what is being bought/refurbished, quotations etc. |
| Proper timing / following cycles | Submitting within the right window, with full documentation; not rushing or missing deadlines increases likelihood. Also, not applying again too soon after getting a grant. There are periods before reapplication eligibility depending on past awards. |
| Good supporting documentation | Including quotes for equipment/furnishings; letters from stakeholders; clarity in what will be delivered; possibly photos or plans for refurbishment; financial statements. These make the application appear serious and capable. |
UK registered charities, schools, and non-profit organizations.
Priority is given to projects located within the vicinity of Ford’s operations (Essex, Bridgend, Southampton, Dunton, Dagenham, and Halewood).
Small local projects are particularly encouraged.
