The Foundation has long recognized the difficulty in training new thought leaders in clinical, translational, and basic science. Funding and support for endocrine fellows remains quite limited both during their training and as they move into nascent academic careers. Our Fellows Research Grant Program is an integral part of what we do to support fellows and junior faculty investigators. Obtaining new grants is often dependent on prior grant recipient history and the ability of fellows to successfully initiate new research projects. This is critical for further long-term career development. With the compression of many fellow training programs from three years to two more fellows are staying on at their institution and working on more complex research projects. To support fellows initiating their own projects or leading a significant component of a larger department project, EFF has restructured our fellows grant funding program. For 2026 there will be one application and award opportunity for the year.
Similar to NIH/federal grants, awards are based on the quality, relevance, feasibility, and impact of the research proposed; the fellow’s direct learning opportunity, with consideration given for the applicant's experience; and the autonomy of the fellow’s work if the submitted project is part of a larger department or mentor research project.
A rigorous peer-reviewed grant process gives a very thorough high-level evaluation and feedback to all fellows who participate. Grant awardees whose projects pass this rigorous review can utilize these projects as springboard to future success in the field, creating our leaders of tomorrow.
From a reviewer’s perspective, successful EFF proposals typically share the following strengths:
✔ 1. Relevance to Endocrine Science and Patient Care
Proposals should address important endocrinology, diabetes, or metabolic disease questions, clearly tied to clinical or translational impact within the field. EFF 2020
✔ 2. Feasible, Well-Scoped Research Plan
Given the modest budget, projects should have:
Clearly defined aims
Achievable methods and milestones
Realistic timelines within the grant period. EFF 2020
✔ 3. Strong Mentor & Institutional Support
A clear mentor statement and institutional sign-offs signal that the research environment and supervision are appropriate for the proposed work and for the fellow’s development. EFF 2020
✔ 4. Early Career Development Emphasis
Proposals that demonstrate how the project will:
Build independent research skills
Generate preliminary data for future, larger awards
Enhance the candidate’s academic trajectory
tend to score higher. EFF 2020
✔ 5. Scientific Merit, Innovation & Clarity
Reviewers value:
Clear articulation of the research hypothesis or question
Sound methodology
Explicit experimental or analytical plans
Well-justified budgets aligned with the research aims. EFF 2020
✔ Start early on your research proposal and budget justification.
✔ Tailor your narrative to explain why this project matters in endocrinology.
✔ Engage your mentor in drafting the mentor support letter well before the deadline.
✔ Document regulatory approvals in advance (IRB, IACUC, etc.).
✔ Plan for dissemination (presentations/publications) and note expected outlets in your proposal.
