FEBS Advanced Courses - Practical Courses

Federation of European Biochemical Societies

With the key goal of fostering training and mobility of young scientists within Europe, the FEBS Advanced Courses Committee invites individuals or groups with a proven scientific track record on the topic to apply for funds to organize lecture courses, workshops, practical courses with strong hands-on elements, or larger Special Meetings, as part of the FEBS Advanced Courses programme.

Important points for prospective organizers are summarized below but for full details please refer to the latest FEBS Advanced Courses Guidelines and application foms (currently Round 2 of the 2027 call).

Deadlines for applications

There are two rounds of applications each year, both for courses delivered the year after. Round 1 of the 2027 call has a 1 March 2026 deadline. Round 2 of the 2027 call has a 1 September 2026 deadline. Please note however that applications for Joint FEBS/EMBO Lecture Courses can only be submitted at the 1 March deadline each year.

Important: the new Joint FEBS/IUBMB Advanced Courses (a course co-funded by FEBS and IUBMB, with a wider geographic scope) can be submitted by 1 September 2026. Please check the guidelines for more details.

Funding

The maximum course grants available for the different types of FEBS Advanced Courses are currently as follows: FEBS Practical Courses, €20,000; FEBS Combined Practical and Lecture Courses, €20,000; FEBS Workshops, €20,000; FEBS Advanced Lecture Courses, €25,000; Joint FEBS/EMBO Lecture Courses, €30,000; Joint FEBS/IUBMB Advanced Courses, up to €40,000; FEBS Special Meeting, €40,000.

As part of their application, organizers of FEBS Advanced Courses can also request funds to support the attendance of a number of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows at the courses.

Course timing

FEBS Advanced Courses should not be scheduled to take place around the annual FEBS Congress, as specified in the guidelines for each type of course. In 2027, the FEBS Congress will take place 3–7 July 2027 (Riga, Latvia).

Applications procedure

To be eligible for evaluation by the FEBS Advanced Courses Committee, proposals must fully comply with the latest FEBS Advanced Courses Guidelines (see section above). All applications must be submitted through the FEBS Advanced Courses applications and reporting system, using standard forms available from the ‘Downloads for Course Organizers’ list below (please ensure you use the correct and up to date forms).

1. Scientific excellence and originality (Highest Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Scientific excellence is the primary criterion across FEBS funding programs.

Competitive proposals should demonstrate:

Novel research questions
High scientific significance

Potential to advance molecular life sciences

Projects that significantly advance knowledge in biochemistry or molecular biology are particularly competitive.

2. Direct relevance to molecular life sciences (Highest Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Projects outside the molecular life sciences are generally not competitive.

A defining feature of FEBS is its commitment to supporting researchers at the beginning of their careers.

For example, the FEBS Excellence Awards are designed for early-career group leaders, while fellowships and travel grants support doctoral and postdoctoral scientists.
