Eversight is pleased to invite proposals from investigators from our partner institutions for funding promising research projects concerned with vision problems with a special emphasis on projects utilizing human ocular tissue (cornea, other anterior segment structures, posterior segments, optic nerve) or research related to corneal surgery, corneal disease and innovation in eye banking practices. Projects relying solely on animal models will be considered only when their aims are directly related to investigating corneal diseases, surgery or eye bank practices. Funding is provided as seed money to develop promising ideas for research, collect initial data, pilot projects and/or carry out preliminary laboratory work that could facilitate the submission of full-fledged applications for more extensive support from private or governmental agencies. Eye & Vision Research Grants are intended for faculty only (assistant professor level or above).
Available funds will be allocated to proposals showing the greatest potential for advancing scientific knowledge regarding the causes and treatments of visual disorders or eye bank practices. The number of grants to be awarded is subject to availability of discretionary funds.
Awarded applicants are required to submit a final report to summarize the basic findings from their work the following year, as well as reports of any publications or presentations at professional meetings that are related to the topic of the funded research as they occur. All publications, presentations and posters resulting from this research must acknowledge Eversight for its financial support with the proper disclaimer. Eversight will provide appropriate logo files and information upon request.
Finally, principal investigators of funded projects that result in a successful commercial enterprise will be encouraged to make a financial contribution to Eversight equal to or greater than the amount awarded to them through the Eye & Vision Research Grant Program.
All research proposals that meet the eligibility requirements for the Eye & Vision Research Grant Program will be reviewed and evaluated by the Eversight Research Review Committee. The Committee is an independent, volunteer panel of distinguished scientists, ophthalmologists and health services researchers. They will assess the scientific merit and the extent to which each proposal meets with the explicit objectives of the Eye & Vision Research Grant Program. Specific merit criteria include:
After all proposal submissions have been reviewed, the Research Review Committee presents its recommendations in the form of a ranking of meritorious projects to the Eversight Board of Directors. The Board serves the final authority for approving the funding for approved proposals.
Eversight is a leading global nonprofit eye bank whose core mission is to restore sight and prevent blindness through donation, transplantation, and research—all guided by a vision of a world without blindness.
Founded in 1947 as the Illinois Eye-Bank—the fourth such bank in the U.S.—Eversight’s early establishment laid the groundwork for a network of eye banks across the nation.
Through strategic partnerships and expansions—including affiliations with the Michigan and Cleveland Eye-Banks—it evolved into the Midwest Eye-Banks and Transplantation Center (MEBTC) in 1985.
In 2015, the organization unified under the brand Eversight, further expanding its global reach.
In 2019, it launched the Eversight Center for Vision and Eye Banking Research in Cleveland, focusing on innovations such as retinal tissue research.
Most recently, in 2023, Eversight expanded operations into Arizona through partnerships with the Donor Network of Arizona.
Mission: Restore sight and prevent blindness through donation, transplantation, and research.
Vision: A world without blindness.
Core Values:
Service: Compassionate, collaborative, and responsive to partners and communities.
Drive: Embraces continuous improvement, innovation, and learning.
Trust: Transparent, accountable, and respectful stewardship of donated gifts.
| Program Area | Impact & Activities |
|---|---|
| Tissue Recovery & Transplantation | Works with over 6,000 donor families annually to provide sight-restoring tissues—over 8,000 transplants per year. |
| Gift of Sight Program | Charitable support for uninsured or underinsured patients—has consistently covered 100% of eligible transplant requests. |
| Research & Innovation | Provides post-mortem tissues and micro-grants to researchers. Established dedicated research center in 2019, and awarded High Impact Grants for stem cell procedures. |
| Global Outreach | Builds eye banking infrastructure and provides training in countries like Pakistan, South Korea, Jordan, and the Palestinian Territories. |
| Education & Training | Trains hundreds of clinicians annually—including surgeons, fellows, and coordinators. |
| Cultural Recognition | Earned national workplace excellence awards for employee well-being and leadership culture in 2022. |
In 2022, Eversight celebrated 75 years of transforming lives, despite facing a global cornea storage media shortage. That year alone, they facilitated 11,676 tissues for transplantation, research, and education, serving 32 countries and training over 550 clinicians.
In 2024, a $10,000 donation from Kearny Bank helped sustain operations in New Jersey. Eversight’s “small but mighty” team continues to support high success rates (around 97%) in corneal transplants.
Eversight is not just an eye bank—it’s a comprehensive global organization dedicated to combating corneal blindness through clinical service, research innovation, education, and international cooperation.
principal investigators of funded projects that result in a successful commercial enterprise will be encouraged to make a financial contribution to Eversight equal to or greater than the amount awarded to them through the Eye & Vision Research Grant Program
