ESRA Educational Grant

European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy

Grants will be given to ESRA members applying for support of participation in a teaching program in an ESRA Approved Training Institution in Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine in Europe.

The grants are given to encourage participation in teaching programs (rotations) and/ or research of a duration of at least three months *. The grant should be used for travel costs from the home country to the teaching hospital and for costs of living at the teaching site.

Grants are available for extended training modules only in regional anaesthesia and pain medicine (including acute pain & cancer-related pain control). Applications for other anaesthesia-related subjects will be rejected.

Grants consist of a fixed 1000€ travel expenses reimbursement paid by bank transfer four weeks prior to the start of the educational program (to be confirmed by the program’s director). Thereafter, a grant from 500 € to 1000€ per month will be transferred for a minimum period of three months and up to six months. The total of the grant is a maximum 3,000€ + travel expenses whether it is for 3 or 6 months. Please note that 50% of the total grant will be paid upon confirmation of arrival of the grantee by the program’s director, and 50% upon confirmation of full completion of the program as well as upon the grantee’s return to his/her country of origin.

Finally, the grantee is not allowed to change his/her location after the grant has been confirmed. If so, the allocated grant may be subject to cancellation and/or reimbursement. Grants are not transferrable and the training module must be completed within 1 year after reception. Candidates not completing their trainings will not receive the last instalment of the grant and might be asked to refund the money already received. In addition, they will not receive the ESRA certificate.

All applicants who are successful in obtaining a grant will need to then apply to the head of the educational program to ensure that the centre is prepared to host the applicant. Applicants may apply to only one centre at a time so please select your top priority. If there are multiple applicants for a centre then applicants with the highest scores during the grant selection process will be given priority. If your chosen centre cannot host you for whatever reason you may of course apply to other centres. The grant will be valid for two years only from the time of being awarded.

ESRA preferably awards research grants to applicants who have:

Already conducted research in regional anaesthesia or pain management
Published research results
Served as first or senior author on peer-reviewed international publications

Therefore, an applicant with a demonstrated RAPM research track record has a significant advantage.

It also requires an academic mentor commitment, with information about the mentor's publications and qualifications.

A strong mentor should therefore have relevant expertise and provide credible academic support.

The project should demonstrate that the host institution can actually perform the proposed research.

ESRA specifically allows grant funds to cover direct costs such as equipment, materials, research nurses/laboratory assistants, patient insurance, ethics approval, and travel.

For the Research Grant, applicants should:

Be enrolled in a regional anaesthesia PhD program.

For the Educational Grant, applicants must also be ESRA members and at least in their third year of medical specialization; preference is given to applicants from countries lacking financial infrastructure for regional anaesthesia education.
