Purpose of the Award
The SAEMF Education Project Grant awards $20,000 over a one-year period starting July 1 to support innovation in teaching, education, and educational research in emergency medicine for faculty-, fellow-, resident- and medical student-level learners. The mission of the grant is to provide support for a medical education research project.
Expectations of the Award
The Education Project Grant is expected to:
Be novel, innovative, measurable and reproducible.
Whenever possible and applicable, the project’s value should be compared to an existing “gold standard”. If no clear “gold standard” exists, the measurement of its value should be clinically or educationally relevant.
Projects may have qualitative and/or quantitative research component(s).
Provide a product that can be used by educators within SAEM and the general emergency medicine community.
Be relevant and applicable to the practice of emergency medicine.
Address an educational aspect within emergency medicine.
Propose a project that is novel or addresses an existing knowledge gap. This may include new studies, extensions of existing work (e.g., validation), or replication studies. This mechanism is not intended to fund ongoing work (e.g., funds used to pay for applicant’s effort working on a mentor/colleague’s existing study).
A study that builds upon an ongoing project in a novel and uniquely evaluable way could be appropriate.
Examples of suitable projects for the Education Project Grant include:

Successful applicants commonly demonstrate:
SAEMF explicitly lists publication quality and research presentations as indicators of research commitment and competitiveness.
SAEMF places substantial emphasis on the host department.
Competitive institutions typically demonstrate:

A major objective of SAEMF funding is creating investigators who later obtain:
Projects that generate:
for future larger grants are particularly attractive.
This is a unique predictor compared with many other societies.

This reflects the Foundation's goal of building future leaders in academic emergency medicine.
Programs such as the Education Research Training Grant specifically seek applicants who show:
Strong applicants usually present a clear long-term vision for becoming leaders in emergency medicine research or education.
An applicant for the Education Project Grant must:
Note that a defined mentor is not required for the Education Project Grant, but applicants must demonstrate feasibility of their project and a high likelihood of successful completion. Inclusion of a mentor(s) with a track record of educational research experience (particularly for more junior applicants) may help illustrate these qualities.
Multiple Principal Investigator (PI) applications are accepted for this award. A 1-page Multiple PI Plan must be included. Please see the Detailed Instructions for SAEMF Grant Applications for additional information.
