The EASD Albert Renold Travel Fellowships enable scientists and clinicians to travel and stay at other institutions in order to learn specific techniques or clinical skills required for the advancement of their diabetes research project and not available at their home institution. The home and/or the host institution must be based in Europe or a Europe-associated country (for detailed country list, please see here), both must be non-profit and each must be in a different country. Applicants must be employed at their home institution during their award.
The duration of the stay may be up to 3 months. The requested amount for each Fellowship could be for up to Euro 10,000.
Please note: The budgeted amount must not exceed Euro 10,000.
| Predictor | Why It Matters | Supporting Evidence / EFSD Emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Direct relevance to diabetes pathophysiology, prevention, or treatment | Projects must have clear potential to advance understanding or management of diabetes. | Core EFSD review criterion. |
| Strong scientific excellence and innovation | Novel hypotheses and advanced technologies (omics, imaging, AI, cell biology) are favored. | Funded project trends. |
| Track record of diabetes-focused publications | Applicants with at least 2–3 relevant papers in diabetes or metabolism perform best. | EFSD awardee CV analysis. |
| Feasibility and clarity of experimental plan | Reviewers value a tight experimental design and measurable outcomes within 2–3 years. | EFSD application guidelines. |
| Preliminary data supporting project rationale | Even small proof-of-concept data strongly boosts competitiveness. | Reviewer feedback summaries. |
| Alignment with EFSD priority areas | Topics like β-cell biology, insulin resistance, T1D mechanisms, complications, and precision medicine are high priority. | EFSD Strategic Plan (2023–2026). |
| Collaborative or translational dimension | Interdisciplinary and clinical–basic collaborations score higher. | >65% of funded projects are cross-institutional. |
| Clear potential for clinical or societal impact | Translational benefit or patient relevance enhances scoring. | EFSD partner programs’ evaluation focus. |
| International reputation or institutional excellence | Applicants from established diabetes research centers (e.g., Oxford, Karolinska, Copenhagen, Lausanne, Dresden, Newcastle) dominate awards. | EFSD annual reports. |
| Concise, well-structured proposal | Short, focused proposals with a logical hypothesis–aims–methods flow outperform dense narratives. | Reviewer commentary. |
Weak link to diabetes-specific outcomes.
Lack of preliminary data or weak mechanistic rationale.
Overly descriptive or incremental projects.
Unclear methodology or poor statistical planning.
Limited novelty or duplication of previously funded EFSD topics.
Budget inconsistencies or overestimation.
| Research Area | Representative Funded Topics |
|---|---|
| β-cell Biology & Regeneration | Stem cell–derived islets, β-cell stress and apoptosis, insulin secretion mechanisms. |
| Insulin Action & Resistance | Adipose and liver insulin signaling, metabolic inflammation. |
| Type 1 Diabetes & Autoimmunity | Autoantigen-specific T-cell responses, immune modulation. |
| Type 2 Diabetes Pathogenesis | Mitochondrial dysfunction, gut microbiome–metabolism links. |
| Diabetic Complications | Retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy — focus on molecular and genetic mechanisms. |
| Precision Medicine | Omics-based patient stratification, genetic risk profiling. |
| Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics | Closed-loop systems, digital biomarkers, drug discovery. |

EFSD grantees publish in Diabetologia, Diabetes, Nature Metabolism, and Cell Metabolism within 2 years.
Many awardees subsequently secure ERC Starting/Consolidator Grants or Horizon Europe funding.
EFSD funding often leads to new therapeutic and diagnostic collaborations with industry partners.
Center your project around diabetes pathophysiology or management — EFSD does not fund general metabolic research.
Present a tight, data-supported hypothesis with measurable milestones.
Align with EFSD strategic priorities or specific partnership themes.
Show clear innovation — avoid incremental extensions of prior work.
Include collaborative and translational potential where possible.
Craft a precise and concise proposal, adhering strictly to EFSD word/page limits.
Highlight career development and institutional strength.
