Excellence in Professionalism Award

The Excellence in Professionalism Award will recognize a faculty member who exemplifies professionalism and personifies Duke’s guiding principles of  respect, trustworthiness, diversity, teamwork, and learning . All Medical Center Faculty, trainees and/or staff are invited to nominate regular rank faculty in the School of Medicine. Letters of nomination should include specific   examples of how they exemplify the qualities of professionalism. The strongest nominations will have 3-5 letters of support (no more than 5 letters should be submitted).  Nomination due date February 9, 2024

Gordon G. Hammes Teaching Award

This award is named for Gordon G. Hammes, Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry and University Distinguished Professor, who served as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs from 1991 through 1998.  During his tenure as Vice Chancellor, Professor Hammes led a number of major initiatives to improve the scope and quality of our graduate program within the School of Medicine.  The School of Medicine established this award in 2001 in his honor to recognize a faculty member for continuing excellence in teaching and mentoring, and for exemplary commitment to the education of graduate students within Basic Science Departments and Graduate Training Programs of the School of Medicine.

Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award

 The  Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award ,  presented by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation is designed to recognize compassion and sensitivity in the delivery of healthcare. This award is presented annually to a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding compassion in the delivery of care; respect for patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues; as well as demonstrated clinical excellence. All Medical Center faculty and staff are invited to nominate  regular rank faculty  in the School of Medicine who exemplify the traits honored by this faculty award.  Please note that winners may receive copies of their nomination letters.  Self-nominations will not be accepted.  Nomination due date January 29, 2024

Leonard Palumbo Jr., MD Faculty Achievement Award

 The  Leonard Palumbo Jr., MD Faculty Achievement Award , recognizes a member of the School of Medicine faculty who displays dedication to compassionate patient care and excellence in the teaching and mentoring of young physicians. All Medical Center faculty and staff are invited to nominate  regular rank faculty  in the School of Medicine who exemplify the traits honored by this faculty award.  Please note that winners may receive copies of their nomination letters.  Self-nominations will not be accepted.  Nomination due date January 29, 2024

Michelle P. Winn Inclusive Excellence Award

The Michelle P. Winn Inclusive Excellence Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to diversity and inclusion within the School of Medicine community.  Nominees should exemplify excellence, innovation, and leadership in helping to create a more diverse and inclusive environment.  Any member of the School of Medicine may submit a nomination for the award in each of these categories: student, staff, faculty, trainee, and postdoc. 

Master Clinician/Teacher Award

The Master Clinician/Teacher Award honors faculty for accomplishment and service in the area of teaching in the Medical School or Medical Center. Nominees shall have made an extraordinary commitment to teaching and students. Eligible candidates must have a faculty appointment in the Duke University School of Medicine and participate in the education of fellows, residents, medical students, Physician Assistant, Pathology Assistant, Occupational Therapy Doctorate, Doctor of Physical Therapy students, or be involved in one of the School of Medicine Masters Programs. (Nominations/comments from trainees are especially valued.)

Research Mentoring Awards

The  Research Mentoring Awards  recognize faculty members in the School of Medicine for excellence in research mentoring. Excellence can be demonstrated by the accomplishments of individual mentees, by programs implemented by the mentor, or by exceptional creativity in mentoring. All faculty and trainees are invited to nominate research mentors in the School of Medicine who exemplify the traits honored by this award. To be eligible, the nominated faculty member must be regular rank.  Nominations may come from individuals or groups; self-nominations will not be accepted. Please note that winners may receive copies of their nomination letters.  Nomination due date February 19, 2024

Ruth and A. Morris Williams Faculty Research Prize

It is a special pleasure to invite faculty of the Duke University School of Medicine engaged in  clinical science research  in any department to apply for the annual Ruth and A. Morris Williams Faculty Research Prize. The Williams family established this prize to advance research opportunities for early career faculty members and is awarded for research excellence demonstrated at Duke. The Williams Prize recognizes groundbreaking research in basic or clinical science in alternate years. The  2024 Williams Prize  will recognize outstanding contributions in  clinical science research . Applicants must be School of Medicine faculty who are 10 years or fewer from first faculty appointment at assistant professor level at any institution. The intent is to honor and reward groundbreaking research that has substantially been conducted at Duke.  Application due date February 26, 2024
