Coefficient Giving is launching this open call for expressions of interest (EOI) for research and other work that could increase the health impact of existing vaccines, primarily for people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Eligible vaccines may already be licensed or WHO-prequalified, or they may be in late-stage development with an established safety profile.
Decisions about dose, schedule, and target populations are often made during development with limited evidence or resources available to explore options. They may also reflect regulatory requirements, commercial priorities, or a decision to address the largest burden first. Further work could potentially identify ways to improve the protection vaccines provide, extend their use to additional populations, and reduce schedule complexity or costs to reach more people to improve overall impact.
Developers may have limited incentives to fund this work, particularly where it would reduce the number of doses required, reduce costs, or serve populations with limited purchasing power. The work may also go unsupported because it is unclear what evidence is needed to change policy. As a result, potential global health impact goes unrealized.
However, optimizing how existing vaccines are used can cost far less than their original development, and the path from evidence to impact can be shorter and more likely to succeed than novel vaccine development — making this work particularly cost-effective. One example of this type of opportunity is the switch to single-dose HPV schedules, which reduced the number of vaccine doses required per completed course and the need for follow-up visits, greatly increasing the cost-effectiveness of the vaccine and the ability to protect more people from the same supply.
We are interested in proposals where additional evidence, regulatory work, or decision support could significantly improve how an existing vaccine is used. Clinical trials, observational studies, modeling, analysis, and regulatory or policy work are all eligible. Proposed approaches should be feasible, address relevant questions, and produce evidence or outputs that the intended decision-makers can use.
The EOI submission deadline is December 21, 2026.
