The Crafoord Foundation invites applications for grants primarily for 1-year research projects (A). Some of the funds that the Foundation has at its disposal may be awarded a 2-year grant (A) and larger grants (B).
Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s website by 4pm on the first Thursday in February at the latest. You can only submit one application. However, you can be both the main applicant and co-applicant in two separate applications.
Research grants are awarded to applicants at Lund University, Malmö University, Linnaeus University, Kristianstad University, Halmstad University, Blekinge Institute of Technology and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp.
Funding
Approved costs
Costs must be directly related to research activities within the project.
A supplement for overheads is permitted for personnel and running costs up to a maximum of 35%. Costs for premises are included in the supplement for overheads. Supplement for overheads may not be used for equipment.
Equipment becomes the property of the receiving institute.
Costs may be counted from 1 June 2026 at the earliest.
Unapproved costs
A. One-or two-year research grants
The Foundation awards grants of up to SEK 1 million per annum for 1 or 2 years, with the possibility to apply for an extension.
The Foundation may transfer applications for 2-year funding to 1-year funding.
Applications for 2-year funding must comply with the template for 1-year funding. In addition, the project Annex must include:
If the application is for an extension of a previous application, the above instructions apply. However, such an application should include a presentation of the work that has been carried out within the project (max. 10,000 characters).
B. Larger grants
A minor part of the awarded funding may be approved for larger grants, primarily for:
An application for funding for equipment should include a project description that briefly outlines the sub-projects that will make use of the equipment.
The following criteria must be fulfilled:
A university, faculty, institution or individual researcher may apply for the above. The application must specify an accountable principal applicant.
While the Crafoord Foundation does not publicize a detailed scoring rubric, its terms & conditions and call documentation emphasize several core criteria that influence success:
✅ 1. Scientific Quality & Research Excellence
Applications must demonstrate rigorous scientific reasoning and quality, with clear background, aims, methods, and expected outcomes. This is explicitly stated as a major assessment factor. Crafoord
How to show this:
Clearly articulate research questions and hypotheses.
Situate the project within current literature and explain its novelty or significance.
Provide details on methods and analytical strategy.
✅ 2. Feasibility Within Time & Budget
Projects should be appropriately scoped for the 1- or 2-year grant horizon and the funding available (up to SEK 1 M/year). Crafoord
What reviewers look for:
Realistic work plan with milestones and deliverables.
Logical alignment between budget items and research goals.
✅ 3. Relevance to the Field & Potential Impact
While the foundation funds basic and applied research across disciplines, proposals should show clear relevance to advancing knowledge or research capacity within the chosen scientific field. Crafoord
Helpful to include:
A statement of potential impact or how the work might open new research avenues.
✅ 4. Support of Emerging Researchers
The Crafoord Foundation explicitly gives priority to younger researchers (up to ~12 years after PhD) and to investigators building their own independent research profile, including those without prior foundation funding. Crafoord
Success predictors here:
Demonstrated progress toward independent research goals.
Limited prior large grants (which suggests growth potential).
✅ 5. Capacity to Contribute to a Strong Research Environment
Applications are encouraged to specify whether the project fits into or enhances a larger research programme or environment at the host institution — meaning collaborative or integrative work can be viewed favorably. Crafoord
Here’s how you can tailor your application to the Crafoord Foundation’s expectations:
📌 Comprehensive Project Annex
Make sure your Project Annex clearly includes:
Concise background and problem statement
Novelty or “newsworthiness” of the research
Detailed methods and expected results
Publication and dissemination plans
Ethical considerations (if relevant)
This format is explicitly required in the application template. Crafoord
📌 Strong CV & Publication Record
The application requires a CV (max 2 pages) and a publication list (last 5 years) — both matter for evaluating capability and productivity. Crafoord
Tip:
Highlight relevant experience, major findings, and your role in key publications.
📌 Budget Justification
Provide a clear and credible budget narrative linked directly to project activities.
Personnel (e.g., postdocs/guests), equipment, research visits, running costs are eligible.
The foundation does not fund principal applicant’s salary. Crafoord
📌 Ethical and Practical Considerations
If your research involves human subjects, animals, or other regulated areas, ensure ethics and compliance plans are noted in the project description. Crafoord
| Success Predictor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Scientific quality & clarity | Foundation emphasizes scientific excellence. Crafoord |
| Feasibility & scoped design | Projects must fit a 1–2 year timeline and budget. Crafoord |
| Relevance & potential impact | Shows contribution to field advancement. Crafoord |
| Emerging researcher focus | Priority for younger, independent researchers. Crafoord |
| Fit with research environment | Integrates into larger programmes or collaborations. Crafoord |
| Complete, well-organized application | Meets all required document formats and content guidelines. Crafoord |
Although separate from the core grant scheme, the Crafoord Prize system also offers grant allocations each year in the prize discipline that can support equipment, research, conferences, and study visits — often complementing traditional project funding. Kungl. Vetenskapsakademien
For research projects, the Foundation gives priority to younger researchers up to 12 years after a completed PhD. If there are special grounds, such as documented sick leave, parental leave, holding a trade union role, service within total defence, or other service or assignment relevant to the subject area, an equivalent period of time can be subtracted from the time that has passed since completion of the PhD.
The Foundation gives priority to researchers who have not previously been granted funding and who are in the process of building up their own research work.
Applicants can receive project funding for a maximum period of four years.
The above applies to principal applicants.
When assessing applications, emphasis is placed on scientific quality.
An additional important factor is the project’s potential to promote the formation and development of a robust research environment at the university or college in question. The application must specify whether the project is included in or related to a larger project.
The main applicant must be an individual, with the exception of that stated in B.
The Foundation does not grant funding for doctoral students nor emeriti.
Applications not fulfilling the above requirements will not be considered.
Applicants are aware of and accept that, in case of grants being awarded, the Foundation publishes applicants’ names on the Foundation’s website.
The Foundation presupposes that, when results are published, it must be clearly specified that funding has been received from the Foundation. The name of the Foundation is Crafoordska stiftelsen in Swedish and, in English, The Crafoord Foundation.
