Prevent Cancer Foundation

Community projects within Track 2 of the 2027 Impact Grants cycle will focus on cancer prevention and early detection in rural communities. • Core mission:
    • Prevent cancer or detect it early
  • Funded areas include:
    • Screening
    • Risk prediction
    • Vaccination and prevention strategies

👉 Treatment-only oncology projects → low success probability

🎯 2. Clear Impact on Reducing Cancer Incidence or Mortality (Top Predictor)

Successful proposals:

  • Demonstrate:
    • Reduced cancer risk OR earlier diagnosis
  • Must show:
    • Measurable population health benefit

👉 Key question:
“Will this help prevent cancer or detect it earlier?”

🔄 3. Translational & Implementation Focus (Critical)

  • Eligible projects include:
    • Preclinical, translational, clinical, or implementation research
  • Strong preference for:
    • Real-world applicability (clinical or community settings)

👉 Pure lab science without application is less competitive

🚀 4. Innovation in Screening & Risk Prediction

High success areas include:

  • Novel screening technologies
  • Risk prediction models
  • Behavioral interventions to improve screening uptake

👉 Innovation must be practical and scalable

🌍 5. Health Equity & Underserved Populations (Major Differentiator)

  • Strong emphasis on:
    • Reducing disparities in cancer prevention and screening
  • Priority for:
    • Medically underserved communities
    • Rural populations

👉 Equity-focused proposals have a clear advantage

👥 6. Community Engagement & Real-World Implementation

  • Especially for community grants:
    • Projects must:
      • Engage local populations
      • Include patient navigation or outreach

👉 Programs with community trust and partnerships score higher

👩‍🔬 7. Early-Career Investigator Development (Major Priority)

  • PCF strongly supports:
    • Fellows and early-career researchers
  • Goal:
    • Build next generation of prevention scientists

👉 Career development is a key evaluation factor

🧪 8. Feasible, Pilot-Scale Research (Seed Funding Model)

  • Grants are typically:
    • ~$100K over 2 years
  • Designed to:
    • Generate preliminary data

👉 Overly ambitious projects are often rejected

📈 9. Strong Potential for Future Funding & Impact

  • Explicit goal:
    • Lead to larger external grants
  • Evidence:
    • Awardees often secure significant follow-on funding and publications

👉 Projects with clear next-step funding pathways score higher

🧠 10. Broad Applicability Across Cancer Types

  • Funds multiple cancers:
    • Breast, lung, cervical, colorectal, skin, etc.
  • Preference for:
    • Approaches applicable across populations or cancer types

👉 Broader impact improves competitiveness
