The CHARGE Syndrome Foundation, Inc. (Foundation) announces the availability of research grants of up to $50,000.
The purpose of these grants is to promote:
a) New biomedical research into the etiology, genetic and molecular mechanisms and treatment of CHARGE syndrome, or
b) Promote clinical research on the medical diagnosis, treatment, intervention, prevention, and support of individuals with medical, health, and behavioral issues, and their families.
Both established and new investigators are encouraged to apply. Proposals are for funding from April 1, 2027 to March 31, 2028 and may be in any area of basic, clinical, translational or epidemiological research. All proposals will be peer reviewed. Preference will be given to investigators who have not previously received funding from the Foundation
Application timetable: Opening: 10/1/2026
Deadline: 12/15/2026
Grants will be available: 4/1/2027
Application process:
All applications should be submitted by email to the Foundation at Research@CHARGEsyndrome.org. Review criteria will include:
• Scientific and/or clinical merit
• Feasibility
• Likelihood of future funding from other sources
• Innovation
• Collaboration with other researchers
• Relevance to CHARGE syndrome
Funds may not be used for faculty salaries, travel expenses, or equipment. Indirect costs are allowed up to 10% of the total grant.
Grant proposals (PDF format) should include:
• Title of project
• Amount requested
• Type of investigator (new vs. established)
• Type of grant mechanism (basic science, clinical, translational, pilot award)
• Abstract (250 words)
• Proposal narrative
The proposal should be organized as follows:
• Scientific/Clinical aims.
• Rationale, motivation, and preliminary findings.
• Research plan explicitly tied to Scientific/Clinical aims.
• References
Proposals should also include:
- Budget with detailed justification (1 page maximum).
- NIH formatted biosketch (limited to 5 pages) for each investigator
Grant conditions: As a condition of accepting funds from the Foundation, applicants must agree to the following conditions:
- Acknowledge funding provided by the Foundation in any publications or presentations of the research. - Make published results available to the Foundation for distribution.
- Be available to attend a Foundation Conference to present the findings.
- Become members of the Foundation ($30 cost).
- Make publicly available all reagents, resources, and data generated with the grants.
- Produce proof of how the grant funds were spent upon request of the Foundation.
The 2026 Request for Proposals explicitly lists scientific/clinical merit, feasibility, likelihood of future funding, innovation, collaboration and relevance to CHARGE syndrome. The ranking below reflects those published criteria.
chargesyndrome.org
★★★★★
Direct relevance to CHARGE syndrome — Critical
Address the syndrome itself, including its causes, CHD7-related biology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment or associated health and behavioral needs. General genetics or disability research should establish a direct and meaningful CHARGE-specific connection.
★★★★★
Scientific and clinical merit — Critical
Define an important unanswered question, explain the evidence supporting it and show how the proposed study could advance understanding or improve care for people with CHARGE syndrome.
★★★★★
Innovation — Critical
Introduce a novel mechanism, diagnostic approach, intervention, treatment strategy or way of understanding the syndrome. Explain what the project adds beyond previous CHARGE research.
★★★★★
Feasibility and a focused research plan — Critical
Specify aims, methods, preliminary findings, milestones and a realistic budget. The project should fit the available resources and funding period, with each method clearly connected to a research aim.
★★★★☆
Potential for future external funding — Very high
Show how the findings could generate preliminary evidence for larger grants from agencies such as the NIH or other funding bodies. Explain the next research step the award would make possible. This is an explicit Foundation review criterion.

★★★★☆
Collaboration with other researchers — Very high
Bring together relevant expertise, such as genetics, developmental biology, audiology, ophthalmology, cardiology, behavioral health or rehabilitation. Explain how collaborators contribute to the aims and improve the likelihood of success.
★★★★☆
Clear rationale and preliminary findings — Very high
Describe what is already known, the knowledge gap and the evidence that supports the proposed approach. Preliminary findings should justify the next experiment or clinical study rather than merely summarize background information.
★★★★☆
Potential to improve diagnosis, treatment or support — High
For clinical projects, identify the patients, families or healthcare professionals who could benefit. Relevant outcomes include diagnostic accuracy, treatment response, communication, sensory function, behavioral health and quality of life.
★★★★☆
Investigator suitability and access to resources — High
Demonstrate appropriate expertise, access to the required models, samples, participants or clinical data, and the capacity to conduct the work. New and established investigators may apply, with preference for applicants who have not previously received Foundation funding.
★★★★☆
Application quality and budget compliance — Essential gate
Follow the five-page proposal limit, include the required abstract, aims, rationale, research plan, references, justified budget and investigator biosketches. Ensure costs comply with the Foundation's restrictions.
