Canada Gairdner International Award
The Canada Gairdner International Award recognizes outstanding researchers whose unique scientific contributions have increased the understanding of human biology and disease.
The Gairdner Foundation invites the scientific community to nominate qualified researchers for this Award. Nominations in the field of translational research are welcome. The award is intended for seminal bodies of work, not cumulative lifetime achievement.
Quality nominations are essential to the evaluation process. Packages should be accurate, current, and complete throughout the five year period of consideration. The nomination portal is open each year from mid-April – October 1 for edits, changes or additions by nominators.
Key Dates
Nominations for the 2027 International and Global Health Awards are due by 11:59 pm PDT on October 1, 2026.
Nominations for the 2027 Momentum Awards are due by 11:59 pm PDT on July 15, 2026.
This are strict deadlines. Nominations received after this date will be considered for the following year.
The 2026 recipients were announced on March 31, 2026, and their awards will be presented in October of 2026.

Strong nominations explain:

- Why the candidate deserves recognition for the cited body of work
The International Award can recognize equal contributors or scientists who made parallel discoveries, making accurate attribution especially important.

Recent Gairdner laureates are consistently recognized for seminal discoveries or contributions. This indicates that the strongest candidates have work that:

For the John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, the strongest predictor is scientifically based research that has measurably improved the health and well-being of people facing health inequities worldwide.
Strong candidates typically demonstrate:

- Strong scientific evidence
- Implementation at meaningful scale
- Improved health outcomes

For this award, real-world health impact is more important than biomedical discovery alone.
8. A focused, cohesive recent research program (highest predictor for the Momentum Award)
The Peter Gilgan Canada Gairdner Momentum Award has a different profile. It recognizes mid-career researchers working in Canada who have produced a focused, cohesive body of exceptional research, particularly during their recent active research years, with continued potential for impact on human health.
The strongest candidates demonstrate:

- Exceptional recent contributions
- Scientific leadership

9. Outstanding scientific reputation and recognition (high predictor)
Successful nominees generally have strong evidence of international scientific standing, such as:

- Major discoveries recognized by peers
- International leadership
- Strong citation and field influence
- Invitations to major scientific forums
- Previous prestigious honors
However, reputation supports the nomination; it does not replace the requirement for a clearly identifiable major contribution.
10. Exceptional nomination quality (high and actionable predictor)
The Foundation explicitly emphasizes that quality nominations are essential to the evaluation process. A competitive nomination should be accurate, current, complete, and focused on the specific discovery or contribution being recognized.
The strongest nomination packages typically:
- Lead with the discovery, not the CV
- Explain the contribution in clear language
- Establish originality and priority
