BSPP Travel Fund

British Society for Plant Pathology

The BSPP Travel Fund is open to members of the Society to assist with expenses for conferences, study tours, courses and visits. Students are particularly encouraged to apply. Awards will be made by BSPP trustees, whose decision shall be final. Applications will be judged in line with the aims of the Society and the benefit to the member in terms of learning and career development. The size of the awards offered will depend on the number of applicants and the funds available, but will not exceed half of the total costs, or £1000.

To apply, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria and answer the questions fully. Note, the BSPP will not support more than one travel award to members of a single research group to attend the same event.

28th February, 31st May, 31st August and 30th November.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong Plant Pathology Relevance

The most important predictor is whether the proposed work, training, visit, or event directly advances plant pathology. BSPP's funding programs are specifically designed to support plant disease research, pathogen biology, host–pathogen interactions, disease management, diagnostics, epidemiology, and related areas.

2. Clear Scientific or Training Benefit

Successful applications clearly explain:

  • What knowledge will be generated
  • What skills will be acquired
  • How the applicant's research will improve
  • Why the activity is important for plant pathology

Review committees place strong emphasis on tangible outcomes.

3. Alignment with the Funding Mechanism

BSPP operates several distinct funding programs, each with different goals:

  • Travel Fund → conference attendance and study visits
  • Junior Fellowships → laboratory visits and collaboration
  • MSc/MRes Bursaries → postgraduate training
  • Event Organisation Fund → conferences and workshops
  • Plant Pathology Promotion Fund → outreach and public engagement

Applications that precisely match the objectives of the chosen scheme tend to perform best.

4. Well-Defined and Feasible Plan

Funded applicants generally provide:

  • Specific objectives
  • Clear timelines
  • Realistic budgets
  • Achievable deliverables

For travel and fellowship schemes, reviewers assess whether the proposed activity can realistically be completed within the funding period.

5. Career Development Impact

BSPP places strong emphasis on supporting students and early-career researchers.

Competitive applications explain:

  • How the award will advance the applicant's career
  • New expertise to be gained
  • Future research opportunities enabled by the funding

This is particularly important for Junior Fellowships and postgraduate bursaries.

6. Collaboration Potential

BSPP specifically encourages:

  • Interdisciplinary research
  • New collaborations
  • International research links
  • Laboratory exchanges

For Junior Fellowships, collaboration and networking are explicit goals of the scheme.

7. Acquisition of New Skills and Techniques

Applications proposing to learn:

  • Advanced molecular techniques
  • Bioinformatics approaches
  • Diagnostic methods
  • Epidemiological tools
  • Genomics or phenotyping technologies

often align well with BSPP's objective of building research capacity.

8. Value for Money

BSPP funding is relatively modest compared with major government grants. Successful proposals therefore demonstrate:

  • Efficient use of funds
  • Appropriate budgeting
  • Clear justification of costs

Reviewers consider whether the expected benefits justify the requested support.

9. Community and Outreach Impact

For outreach-focused schemes, strong applications show how they will:

  • Increase awareness of plant pathology
  • Engage students or the public
  • Promote plant health and biosecurity
  • Benefit the wider scientific community

These aspects are particularly important for the Plant Pathology Promotion Fund and event-support schemes.

10. Active Participation in the Plant Pathology Community

Although not a formal requirement for every scheme, successful applicants often demonstrate:

  • Conference participation
  • Scientific presentations
  • Society engagement
  • Collaborative research activities

Such evidence increases confidence that the applicant will maximize the value of BSPP support.

Commonly Funded Themes

Frequently supported areas include:

  • Plant–pathogen interactions
  • Fungal, bacterial, viral, and oomycete diseases
  • Crop protection and disease management
  • Plant biosecurity
  • Disease diagnostics
  • Epidemiology and surveillance
  • Molecular plant pathology
  • Emerging plant diseases
  • Training in advanced research methodologies
  • International research collaborations

Funding Strategy

For BSPP, the strongest application usually combines:

  1. A clear plant pathology focus.
  2. Well-defined and achievable objectives.
  3. Strong career-development benefits.
  4. Acquisition of new skills or collaborations.
  5. Demonstrable value to the wider plant pathology community.
  6. Excellent alignment with the chosen BSPP funding scheme.

  • You must have a three-year membership, or have been a member of the Society for at least 12 months by the date of the event. Student members may apply for funds to attend the BSPP Conferences (PPATH/ECPP) if they have been a member for less than 12 months.
  • Members may only be awarded a travel award once every 24 months.
  • Applications can not be submitted for both the travel fund and for a fellowship in the same year.
Awards must be taken up within 6 months of notification.
  • The Trustees reserve the right to disregard any of these guidelines for applications of the most exceptional merit.
  • If additional costs of care incurred by attending a conference would be prohibitive to attending, the BSPP has initiated a Carer Support Grant – see details, eligibility and how to apply here.

It is a requirement of the award that a report is sent to BSPP within one month of the event for inclusion in our newsletter or website. Further information will be supplied to successful applicants.
