AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Clear relevance to aging / gerontology (highest predictor)

This is the biggest predictor across nearly every GSA opportunity.

Competitive applications usually address research in:

  • aging biology
  • geriatrics
  • dementia and cognitive aging
  • social and behavioral aging
  • caregiving
  • health policy and aging
  • long-term care
  • healthy aging / lifespan
  • age-related disparities
  • geroscience

GSA’s mission is interdisciplinary, so strong applications often connect aging research across biological, medical, psychological, or social domains.

2. Scientific quality and methodological rigor (very high predictor)

For student research awards, GSA explicitly evaluates:

  • quality of review of prior theory and literature
  • originality/creativity
  • appropriateness of methods
  • data analysis
  • execution of study design
  • interpretation of findings
  • discussion of limitations

These published criteria make methodological rigor one of the clearest predictors of success.

Strong submissions typically show:

  • a clear hypothesis or research question
  • appropriate design and methods
  • strong analytic approach
  • conclusions supported by the data

3. Interdisciplinary significance

This is a distinctive GSA predictor compared with many specialty societies.

Because GSA spans multiple aging disciplines, successful proposals often bridge fields such as:

  • geriatrics + public health
  • biology + clinical medicine
  • psychology + aging policy
  • sociology + caregiving
  • neuroscience + aging outcomes

Projects with cross-disciplinary relevance tend to stand out strongly.

4. Innovation and originality

GSA repeatedly highlights innovation in both its awards and grant-development programming.

Strong applications often present:

  • a novel research question
  • a new methodological approach
  • an innovative intervention for older adults
  • fresh theoretical insight into aging

Originality is specifically named in student award judging criteria.

5. Publication and academic productivity

For early-career research recognition and investigator awards, common predictors include:

  • first-author publications
  • conference abstracts/posters
  • presentations at GSA Annual Scientific Meeting
  • evidence of an emerging research program in aging

For some early-career awards, GSA explicitly looks for evidence of independent research.

6. Strong writing and clarity of presentation

A notable predictor at GSA.

Published review criteria include:

  • writing style
  • progression of ideas
  • adherence to guidelines

Well-organized, clearly written submissions appear to perform better than technically strong but poorly communicated applications.

7. Career commitment to gerontology / aging science

Reviewers often favor applicants who show a sustained commitment to aging research or improving the lives of older adults.

Strong indicators:

  • prior aging-focused projects
  • aging-related publications
  • involvement with GSA sections or annual meetings
  • clear long-term research trajectory in gerontology

Applicants must be a Student or Early Career member of Behavioral and Social Sciences Section of GSA.

Applicants much be the first author of the submitted work.

  • Applicants must submit an abstract for the Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • The abstract must be accepted for the conference.

  • The student must present at the Annual Scientific Meeting.

  • The applicant must submit a PDF or PowerPoint version of their poster.

The applicant must submit a statement from a mentor or advisor verifying that the work is primarily the student's.

The applicant must submit a statement from a mentor or advisor verifying that the work is primarily the student's.
