Bert and Natalie Vallee Award in Biomedical Science

American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

The Bert and Natalie Vallee Award in Biomedical Science is awarded to an established scientist for outstanding accomplishments in basic biomedical research.

Nominations must originate from ASBMB members; however, the nominee need not be an ASBMB member.

The award consists of $10,000, a plaque and travel expenses for attendance at the ASBMB annual meeting to present a lecture.

The Bert and Natalie Vallee Award in Biomedical Science was established by The Vallee Foundation (formerly known as the Bert and N. Kuggie Vallee Foundation) in 2012 to recognize international achievements in the sciences basic to medicine.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong mechanistic scientific question

The most competitive proposals typically focus on:

  • molecular mechanisms,
  • biochemical pathways,
  • protein structure/function,
  • cell signaling,
  • metabolism,
  • gene regulation,
  • enzymology,
  • molecular therapeutics.

Clear mechanistic depth is one of the strongest predictors of success.

2. High scientific rigor

ASBMB reviewers strongly value:

  • robust experimental design,
  • reproducibility,
  • appropriate controls,
  • quantitative methodology,
  • strong statistical analysis,
  • technically sound approaches.

Weak methodological detail is a common reviewer concern.

3. Innovation and novelty

Successful applications often demonstrate:

  • new biological insights,
  • innovative molecular techniques,
  • emerging technologies,
  • novel mechanistic hypotheses,
  • interdisciplinary molecular approaches.

Incremental projects without clear advancement of the field may be less competitive.

4. Strong preliminary data

Competitive proposals usually include:

  • pilot experimental findings,
  • proof-of-concept data,
  • feasibility studies,
  • prior publications supporting the hypothesis,
  • validated experimental systems.

Strong preliminary evidence substantially increases reviewer confidence.

5. Publication and research productivity

One of the strongest predictors across ASBMB-related programs is:

  • first-author publications,
  • impactful journals,
  • conference presentations,
  • consistent scholarly output,
  • evidence of independent scientific contribution.

Research productivity is heavily weighted.

6. Technical expertise and feasibility

Reviewers favor applicants with demonstrated access to:

  • core facilities,
  • advanced instrumentation,
  • molecular biology platforms,
  • bioinformatics resources,
  • structural biology capabilities,
  • appropriate collaborators.

Feasibility is especially important for technically ambitious projects.

7. Strong mentorship and training environment

For trainees and early-career investigators, major predictors include:

  • experienced mentors,
  • funded laboratories,
  • publication history of the mentor,
  • supportive institutional environment,
  • strong scientific training plans.

Mentor reputation can strongly influence outcomes.

8. Interdisciplinary integration

Competitive applications increasingly combine:

  • biochemistry,
  • computational biology,
  • genomics,
  • structural biology,
  • systems biology,
  • AI/data science,
  • translational medicine.

Cross-disciplinary approaches are becoming more favored.

9. Potential for future external funding

Reviewers often favor projects likely to:

  • generate NIH/NSF preliminary data,
  • support long-term research programs,
  • establish investigator independence,
  • produce high-impact publications.

ASBMB support is often viewed as a career-development stepping stone.

10. Clear communication and hypothesis clarity

Strong applications usually present:

  • a focused hypothesis,
  • logical experimental aims,
  • concise scientific rationale,
  • clearly interpretable endpoints.

Overly broad or unfocused proposals commonly score poorly.

Common Reasons for Rejection

Frequent reviewer concerns include:

  • insufficient novelty,
  • weak mechanistic rationale,
  • inadequate controls,
  • unrealistic scope,
  • poor statistical planning,
  • limited feasibility evidence,
  • descriptive rather than mechanistic science,
  • unclear significance.
