Purpose: To support graduate-level study of issues relevant to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in behavior analysis.
Grants Available: The amount awarded will vary from US$1,000 up to US$5,000 each. Up to three grants will be awarded annually. The SABA Board reserves the right not to award any grant in a given year.
Additional Information: SABA welcomes proposals for innovative research in DEI. These grants are intended to facilitate promising student research projects in behavior analysis. Proposals must be written clearly and concisely, address a question that would be viewed as important to DEI both within and outside the behavior analytic community, and be methodologically rigorous.
Proposals eligible for this grant funding will involve empirical studies and demonstration projects of direct relevance to diversity, equity, or inclusion, where diversity refers to the traits and characteristics that make people unique; equity refers to ensuring fair treatment and equality of opportunity for all individuals; and inclusion refers to the behaviors and social norms that ensure people feel welcome. Eligible proposals may target any aspect of DEI, but preference will be given to substantive projects that evaluate the impact of DEI efforts in community or organizational settings.
Funded proposals will be informed, at least in part, by a behavior analytic perspective. The proposed project may represent part of a multidisciplinary approach that includes behavior analysis. Additionally, the proposed project may be conducted by a team of student researchers, but one principal investigator must be identified. Funded students are eligible to apply for one additional continuation DEI grant in the subsequent year.
Review of Applications: The ABAI DEI Board administers the grant process, and the SABA Board of Directors chooses the grant recipients.
Conditions of Award: Grant recipients agree to provide a brief report on what the grant was used for, along with an outline of expenditures. This report is due to the SABA Board by April 1 of the following year.
(1) Applicants must provide evidence of their commitment to basic, applied, or translational research in behavior analysis.
(2) Applicants must be enrolled or have been accepted in a graduate program in a department of psychology, education, behavioral science, or an allied discipline in which there is a sufficient number of behaviorally oriented faculty members to supervise the proposed research. While both master’s and doctoral students are eligible for consideration, only projects of sufficient scope and substance will be funded.
(3) All applicants must have sufficient time remaining in their academic program to complete the proposed research project.
