The Baltes Distinguished Research Achievement Award recognizes distinguished careers and outstanding contributions to the psychological science of aging. The recipient will be presented with a cash award of $5,000 at the annual APA convention in the year in which the award was made. The recipient will deliver the Baltes DRA Award Address at the convention the following year.
How to Apply
Nomination materials should be uploaded through the Division 20 Awards Submission website.
The nomination materials will include the following:
Nominees will be reviewed by a committee of past-presidents, as well as past and present members of the Division 20 Executive Committee.
In addition to research funding, Division 20 sponsors or recognizes scholarly work presented at APA-related meetings:
Undergraduate & Student Awards: Small monetary awards (around ~$500) for outstanding research or presentations on adult development and aging at the APA convention.
Honorary Recognition: Division 20 recognizes excellence in the field via awards for distinguished contributions, program development, or applied gerontology, although these are typically professional recognitions rather than direct research funding.
The K. Warner Schaie Memorial Fund typically has an April 1 deadline for applications, with awards announced later in the year.
Awards and recognitions are often presented at the APA Annual Convention or Division 20 events.
APA Division 20: Adult Development and Aging fosters research and scientific engagement on lifespan development and aging.
Its flagship competitive grant is the K. Warner Schaie Memorial Fund, supporting graduate students and early career researchers focused on adult development and aging.
Although there’s no published scoring rubric, success predictors include strong scientific merit, relevance to aging research, feasibility, and applicant preparedness as assessed by review committees.
The division also offers student presentation awards and recognition at APA conventions.
Nominees should have a strong record of exceptional theoretical and empirical contributions to the psychological science of aging over the course of their careers.
Nominees must be current members or affiliates of Division 20.
