AUA Data Research Program

American Urological Association

The AUA Data Research Program supports clinical and workforce research projects using data from AUA Data Repository, to address key knowledge gaps and emerging research questions related to urological care, workforce development and health policy.

Participants will use real-world clinical data from AUA Quality (AQUA) Registry and/or population-representative AUA Annual Census data to conduct clinical and/or workforce studies. Participants will receive data access, full statistical analysis support for their research project, and a $2,000 stipend for dissemination costs.

The 2027 Data Research Program cycle includes a special opportunity for investigators to propose new questions for select populations in the upcoming AUA Annual Census. This cycle expands the traditional use of historical Census data by allowing approved applicants to contribute directly to the 2027 Census survey.

Restrictions on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The AUA restricts the use of AUA, AUAER, and UCF content in third party applications, including artificial intelligence technologies, such as large language models and generative AI.

AUA Data Research Program applicants are prohibited from using generative AI tools to draft their Letters of Intent (LOIs) and/or full applications.

AUA Data Research Program awardees are prohibited from using or uploading content accessed or generated through or for the purpose of this Program into external applications, bots, software, or websites, including those using artificial intelligence technologies and infrastructure, including deep learning, machine learning and large language models and generative AI. Prohibited content includes but is not limited to AUA website content, grant application materials, grant review and selection materials, patient-level, provider-level or practice summary Census or AQUA Registry data, research results, etc.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Direct relevance to urology (highest predictor)

This is the most important predictor.

Competitive proposals should focus on major areas of urology, including:

Urologic cancers
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Kidney stone disease
Male infertility
Female pelvic medicine
Reconstructive urology
Pediatric urology
Neuro-urology
Urinary tract infections
Bladder dysfunction
Sexual medicine
Kidney and urinary tract disorders

Projects outside the field of urology are generally not competitive.

2. Scientific excellence and significance (very high predictor)

AUA uses rigorous peer review to identify projects with the greatest scientific merit.

Competitive proposals should demonstrate:

Strong scientific rationale

Relevance to urologic disease
Potential to advance the field

Scientific merit is consistently emphasized across Research Scholar Awards and Data Research Program Awards.

Successful applications frequently investigate:

For the Data Research Program, proposals are explicitly evaluated on scientific merit, feasibility, novelty, and impact using an NIH-style peer-review process.

The Research Scholar Awards are specifically designed to recruit and develop outstanding early-career investigators in urology.

Competitive applicants typically demonstrate:

Strong publication record relative to career stage
Commitment to urologic research
Leadership potential
Scientific independence
Long-term academic career goals

Eligibility generally includes clinical fellows, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty within the first five years of appointment.

7. Strong mentorship and institutional support (very high predictor)

Research Scholar Awards are specifically structured as mentored research training awards.
