The ASRM Research Institute Pilot & Exploratory Grant (up to $50,000) application cycle opens March 1, 2026. The purpose of these awards is to support mid-career researchers by providing grants that allow for preliminary studies in new areas of research conducted by the investigator. Projects can involve physiological, psychological, biochemical, pharmacological, genetic, environmental, clinical, sociocultural, or pathological investigations. Funds may be used for support of a new or ongoing research or clinical investigation project. Grants considered will focus on one of the below-listed priority areas:
To be considered for review, applications must fall within one of these four priority areas. Applicants are encouraged to review the research currently funded page to gain insight into the topical areas of interest and research currently funded by ASRM.
An award of up to $50,000 will be made for a TWO (2) year study period.
ASRM Research Institute Grant Review Groups (GRGs) will review the proposals and awardees determined. To avoid a potential conflict of interest, members of the GRGs will recuse themselves from reviewing any proposal that involves their institutions of employment. Award notifications will be made in May 2026, and funding will be dispersed in June 2026.
Annual progress and financial reports are required and should be sent to research@asrm.org. ASRM Research Institute will review and provide a confirmation of progress report acceptance via email. Continued funding will depend on demonstrated progress and productivity as well as compliance with progress report timelines and any regulatory requirements. A final progress and financial report is required and should be submitted to ASRM within 90 days of project completion.
ASRM does not publicly publish a single “grant success predictor score” (a numerical formula or cut-off metric), but its funding programs generally follow competitive review processes that emphasize certain implicit success predictors:
✳ 1. Scientific Relevance & Merit
Proposed research must be clearly related to reproductive medicine science, clinical care, or patient-centered outcomes.
Strong rationale and clear hypotheses are critical.
✳ 2. Feasibility & Methodology
Research design, planned methods, and measurable outcomes demonstrate that the project is achievable within the budget and timeline.
✳ 3. Investigator Qualifications
Credentials and past research experience of the applicant — particularly for SREI and early-career grants — influence competitiveness.
✳ 4. Alignment With Priorities
Some funding cycles prioritize diversity, health equity, or under-studied areas (e.g., reproductive access disparities, novel biological approaches).
Grants from campaigns like Rescuing Research may target projects affected by federal funding gaps.
✳ 5. Institutional and Scientific Review
Applications are typically evaluated by expert review panels (scientific committees) within ASRM or through partner review structures, similar to major scientific societies.
✳ 6. Compliance & Membership
For many competitive ASRM research awards, applicants must be ASRM members by the time of award initiation (though membership is often not required at the application stage).
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) funds reproductive medicine research through several competitive grants including pilot and exploratory awards, new investigator programs, diversity-focused grants, and patient advocacy funding.
No formal “success predictor score” is publicly available, but applications are evaluated on scientific merit, relevance to reproductive science, feasibility, investigator expertise, alignment with program priorities, and peer review outcomes.
Programs are often time-limited (e.g., pilot grants with year-by-year cycles) and may require ASRM membership by award start.
In recent years, ASRM has invested in “Rescuing Research” campaigns and expanded flexibly driven funding (including named grants like the KY Cha Award) to support cutting-edge reproductive science in the face of funding challenges.
Investigators, meeting eligibility, with expertise in reproductive health and science, including endocrinology, biology, urology, epidemiology, embryology, and andrology, are encouraged to apply. Physicians or scientists with track records in basic, clinical, or translational research in reproductive medicine are encouraged to apply. Eligible applicants include:
Applicants need not be ASRM members at the time of the application but will be required to become members prior to the initiation and throughout the duration of funding. Awardees must maintain an active membership until the project is completed and has been presented at an ASRM Annual Scientific Congress.
