ASRA Chronic Pain Medicine Research Grant

American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine

ASRA Pain Medicine is recognized as a leading organization in the advancement of the science and practice of pain medicine. The ASRA Pain Medicine Chronic Pain Medicine Research Grant aims to promote and facilitate high quality research in pain medicine. Results of such research will guide clinical practice for pain physicians and improve patient health care. This research is needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pain interventions and treatments.

Financial Support

ASRA Pain Medicine invites and greatly appreciates your financial generosity in supporting the Chronic Pain Medicine Research fund. Both individual and corporate donations are welcome. ASRA Pain Medicine is committed to be the largest contributor to this research fund, and to facilitate a rapid growth of funds towards high caliber pain research. Your support to this fund will be recognized by the ASRA Pain Medicine Board of Directors at the annual meetings.

General Information

  • The applicant and co-investigators must be North American, physician members of ASRA Pain Medicine.
  • The amount of the award will not exceed $75,000.
  • All requests for funds will be considered, and the committee retains the right to divide the available funds in any manner it deems appropriate with agreement of the investigators involved.
  • The research proposal must be concerned with an original idea or concept (i.e., has not been done before). The research must be carried out primarily by the applicant. Assistance by or collaboration with other academic faculty or staff anesthesiologists is permitted; these secondary investigators must be identified in the application.
  • The grant requests can be for clinical research projects or research using laboratory animals.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

Some key features of ASRA’s grant programs (and what recipients are asked to do):

They offer several types of grants: the Carl Koller Memorial Research Grant, Chronic Pain Medicine Research Grant, Early-Stage Investigator Award, Graduate Student Award, etc.

Grants cover both clinical and basic/lab studies related to regional anesthesia, acute pain, chronic pain medicine.

ASRA expects deliverables: annual reports, final report, presentations at meetings, and (strongly encouraged) publications.

For some grants (e.g., Graduate Student Award), the applicant must provide a mentor who provides environment, equipment, and time.

The research must often map onto ASRA’s strategic priorities; ASRA has published research priorities to guide applicants.

Predictors of Success Among Past Grant Recipients

From the above, plus how ASRA describes its “impact”, here are what tend to be the characteristics of projects / individuals that do well:

PredictorWhy It Matters & Evidence from ASRA
Early career status / new investigatorsProjects for Early-Stage Investigators or Graduate Students are explicitly supported. Being at an early stage means needing smaller grants to build pilot data & a research track record.
Mentorship & institutional supportHaving a senior mentor, lab or clinical infrastructure, and access to resources increases feasibility. For student grants, mentor support is required.
Clear and feasible project design with preliminary or supporting dataEven when preliminary data is not always required (especially for students), proposals that show some background work or strong rationale seem to have advantage. Projects must define their aims, methods, timeline, deliverables.
Alignment with ASRA’s strategic priorities (both topical and methodological)In announcements ASRA publishes “research priorities” which guide what kind of proposals will be favored.
Plan for dissemination (publication, presentation)ASRA asks recipients to present findings at meetings, report at annual meetings, and to aim for publication (often in Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine) or another peer-reviewed journal.
Timely reporting and fulfilling obligationsBecause they require annual reports, final reports, expense statements, etc., applicants who show good project management are more credible.
Original idea / noveltyProjects need to propose something not yet done—not just repetition. Original concepts tend to be more competitive, especially for student / graduate awards.
Scope matched to funding amountProjects that are appropriately scaled (not over-ambitious for the budget or time) tend to succeed. For example, graduate student grants are smaller (~US$10,000) and project durations are shorter.

Examples that Illustrate These Predictors

Here are a few recent ASRA grant recipients/projects that reflect these success predictors:

The 2024 Early-Stage Investigator Award was awarded to a project testing whether a supra-zygomatic maxillary nerve (SZMN) block can reduce postoperative pain and opioid use in pediatric adenotonsillectomy. This is clinically relevant, has measurable outcomes, matches budget/time, etc.

A 2024 Carl Koller Memorial Research Grant: “Lidocaine Infusions in Pancreatic Cancer: Translational Studies in a Preclinical Model and Human Subjects” – combining basic and translational components. Shows novelty and translational ambition.

What to Watch Out For / What Can Improve Chances

If you are applying (or planning to), emphasize:

Your mentor’s track record and institutional capacity.

Pilot data or strong rationale; also realistic timeline.

Clear aims / specific measurable objectives.

Fit with ASRA’s current priority research areas.

Plan for publications, conference presentation, and data sharing.

Being early in career helps, but clarity of how this grant helps you move up matters.
