About the ASP: The ASP is one of the leading societies in the world devoted to the field of “natural products”, and encompasses a broad array of topics (chemistry, biology, microbiology, ecology, drug discovery) that are used as tools to study living systems in the natural world. For examples of cutting-edge research, see our field’s flagship journal: Journal of Natural Products.
About the Summer Research Fellowship (SRF):
To address inequities facing communities that have been marginalized in the pursuit of graduate school and professional careers in the natural product sciences, we offer a 2.5 month summer research fellowship to support students in lab-based research under the supervision of an ASP faculty mentor. ASP summer research fellows will receive a total stipend of $5,000 for the summer period and will participate in lab research and a series of weekly online training and professional development workshops led by a team of ASP faculty. We expect to support several summer research fellows each year.
How to apply: See https://www.pharmacognosy.us/asp-summer-research-fellowship/ for complete details.
1) Choose a mentor (details in link above).
2) Fill out SRF application form.
3) Upload transcripts, résumé, and letters of recommendation.
Deadline: Applications will be accepted between February 1 – March 1, 2024, and will accepted on a rolling basis.
Across ASP’s competitive programs, successful applicants typically share these strengths:
✔ 1. Alignment With Pharmacognosy/Natural Products Science
All funded and award programs are designed for work in natural products chemistry/biology, molecular discovery, pharmacological evaluation or related areas — articulating how your research fits within pharmacognosy is essential. Wikipedia
✔ 2. Clear, Well-Justified Research Plan
For Research Starter Grants and Student Awards, proposals should have:
A clear hypothesis or objective
Defined methodology
Realistic budget and timeline
Demonstrated feasibility within the award size
Reviewers prioritize projects that can generate meaningful preliminary data or enhance student research portfolios. pharmacognosy.us
✔ 3. Strong Written Communication
Applications (especially papers and proposals) must be well-written, logically structured, and scientifically rigorous. For student research awards, adhering to the format of the Journal of Natural Products improves review clarity. pharmacognosy.us
✔ 4. Institutional & Mentorship Support
Letters of support from advisors or departmental representatives — particularly confirming institutional backing and available resources — signal reviewer confidence in project completion. pharmacognosy.us
✔ 5. Quality of Abstracts for Travel Support
Travel grants hinge on acceptance of high-quality abstracts for the ASP meeting. Competitive abstracts are clear in significance, novelty, methods and expected outcomes. pharmacognosy.us
✔ 6. Early Career Emphasis
Programs like Research Starter Grants and member travel support are geared toward early-career researchers (within ~5–8 years post-Ph.D.) without major external funding — focus on how the support will catalyze research independence or visibility. pharmacognosy.us
✔ Join ASP and maintain membership: Membership is required for most funded grants and travel awards and can often reduce application friction. asph.memberclicks.net
✔ Plan abstracts ahead: Submit a strong abstract to the ASP annual meeting if you want travel support. pharmacognosy.us
✔ Tailor research papers: For student awards, format papers in the style of Journal of Natural Products. pharmacognosy.us
✔ Gather institutional letters early: Advisor support strengthens starter grant applications. pharmacognosy.us
✔ Highlight impact: Whether for student or starter awards, emphasize how the project advances knowledge in natural products. pharmacognosy.us

ASP summer research fellowships are open to students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or
Latina/o/x. Students should be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program at a college or university in the United States (including Puerto Rico and other US territories), and be majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a biomedical science field. Mentors must be ASP members (note: free ASP membership is offered to all students and faculty at majority minority serving institutions). We recognize the interconnectedness of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender, and will seek particularly to support applicants who may be disadvantaged as a result of intersectionality.
