Asia-Pacific Chapter Fellowship

International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis

The purpose of these awards is to promote PD awareness, knowledge, and expertise by visiting a center of excellence for 2-3 months. It is intended primarily for nephrologists and renal nurses in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in developing countries.

NB. Developing countries refer to those countries eligible for ISPD Institutional Membership.

Application Process

The ISPD APC aims to offer up to two fellowship grants per semester. The deadlines for applications are 30th June and 31st December respectively.

Each application must include the following documents:

  1. A completed application form (you can find it at the end of this page)
  2. A curriculum vitae
  3. A recommendation letter from the director of the nephrology unit or department
  4. A letter of acceptance from the institution to be visited
  5. A motivation letter.

A letter of support from the administrator of the applicant’s institution is advisable.

The application should be submitted to the ISPD Asia Pacific Chapter Core Group coordinator (see email address at the end of the Application Form).

The Core Group reviews the applications with respect to:

  • Merit
  • Appropriateness
  • Facility to be visited
  • The supervising physician/trainer at the facility
  • Geographic distribution of applicants

Preference is given to the promotion of peritoneal dialysis in developing countries.

Notification of the Committee’s decision will be made by ISPD Asia Pacific Chapter Core Group within three months of close applications.

Amount for the Award

The award funds are to be used to support travel and living expenses during the visit and/or to support the learning process during the visit, covering an economic round-trip airfare and living allowance to a maximum US$1,500 per month depending on the living standard of the training center city. The total maximum per individual cannot exceed US$3,000. Financial breakdowns with supportive evidence are required for award amount approval.

Payment method

ISPD-APC Fellowship grants will be normally transferred at the end of the stay, after reception and approval of the final report.

Funds can be transferred by wire transfer, or by check. An advance up to 50% can be requested to face the costs of travel and accommodation. Bigger advances are possible, but their approval has to be decided per specific case.

Duration of visit

The applicant shall spend at least 6 weeks at the training site. There is no partial award to support visits of less than 6 weeks. The applicant should commence the visit within 6 months after notification of the award. Candidates may extend the training period beyond 3 months at their own cost. Postponement of commencement date should get prior approval, or it would lead to loss of the scholarship.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong relevance to peritoneal dialysis

The most competitive applications directly address:

  • peritoneal dialysis outcomes
  • PD-related infections and peritonitis
  • dialysis adequacy
  • catheter-related complications
  • residual kidney function
  • fluid balance
  • PD in children
  • home dialysis delivery
  • quality-of-life in PD patients

Projects clearly focused on improving PD care are strongly prioritized.

2. Strong international collaboration

This is one of the clearest ISPD-specific predictors.

ISPD specifically notes that funded studies should be important to the international peritoneal dialysis community and often benefit from multinational collaboration. Projects involving multiple countries or centers tend to be highly competitive.

3. Clear clinical impact and patient benefit

Successful proposals usually demonstrate potential to:

  • improve PD technique survival,
  • reduce peritonitis,
  • improve quality of life,
  • reduce fatigue,
  • preserve residual kidney function,
  • improve access to home dialysis,
  • improve patient outcomes globally.

Clinical applicability is one of the strongest reviewer considerations.

4. Feasible project design with realistic scope

ISPD research grants are relatively modest (typically US $5,000–$10,000), so successful applications usually propose:

  • focused pilot studies,
  • practical multicenter registries,
  • achievable timelines,
  • realistic sample sizes,
  • clear endpoints.

Overly ambitious projects without clear deliverables tend to be less competitive.

5. Strong methodological rigor

Competitive proposals generally demonstrate:

  • robust clinical or epidemiologic design,
  • appropriate statistical analysis,
  • validated PD outcome measures,
  • reproducibility,
  • clear data-collection plans.

Weak methodology is a common reviewer concern.

6. Importance to global PD practice

ISPD strongly values research likely to:

  • influence PD practice internationally,
  • support guideline development,
  • improve care in low-resource settings,
  • increase global PD uptake,
  • strengthen home dialysis programs.

Projects with broad global applicability often score especially well.

7. Support for low- and middle-income country research

ISPD highlights supporting researchers and PD programs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Applications addressing implementation challenges in resource-limited settings may receive additional interest.

8. Strong training and implementation plan (for fellowships)

For fellowship applications, reviewers assess:

  • quality of the host PD centre,
  • clarity of learning objectives,
  • practical hands-on PD training,
  • implementation plan after returning home,
  • how training will expand PD locally.

A clear “how this will improve PD at my institution” plan is particularly important.

9. Strong mentorship and institutional support

Competitive applicants often show:

  • mentorship from experienced nephrologists,
  • support from established PD centers,
  • institutional commitment to PD development,
  • access to relevant patient populations or registries.

Strong host-centre support strengthens feasibility.

10. Potential for future larger research programs

Reviewers favor projects likely to:

  • generate pilot data for larger nephrology grants,
  • lead to multicenter collaborations,
  • result in publications,
  • contribute to future ISPD guidelines,
  • strengthen sustainable PD research networks.

Common Reasons for Rejection

Frequent reviewer concerns include:

  • weak relevance to PD,
  • insufficient international significance,
  • poor feasibility,
  • unclear methodology,
  • overly broad scope,
  • weak implementation plan,
  • limited clinical impact,
  • lack of collaboration.

Applicants must be ISPD members.

  • For medical applicants, candidates who have completed their nephrology training and with some working experience as a junior consultant would be preferred.
  • For applicants of other healthcare professionals, candidates who have a working experience of at least 5 years would be preferred.

There is no age restriction. Excluded from eligibility are employees of industry.

The training center must be a center in Asia or Australia /Oceania with more than 75 home PD patients and has been established for not less than 5 years. Priority will be given to clinical training.
