APS funding is tightly mission-driven. Successful proposals clearly address:

Plant disease biology, epidemiology, diagnostics, or management

Host–pathogen interactions

Plant health, food security, or agricultural sustainability

Plant pathology education or extension

Predictor: Your project or activity must be unambiguously rooted in plant pathology.

2. APS Membership & Community Engagement

Many APS awards and grants require current APS membership, especially for:

Travel awards

Graduate/postdoctoral funding

APS Foundation grants

Active engagement (APS sections, annual meeting participation, service roles) strengthens applications.

Predictor: Being an active APS member with visible engagement improves competitiveness.

3. Appropriate Match to Career Stage

APS programs are highly career-stage specific:

Graduate students: travel awards, fellowships, presentation awards

Postdocs/early career: foundation research grants, professional development awards

Educators: teaching innovation and outreach awards

Predictor: Applying to the correct mechanism for your career level is essential.

4. Scientific or Educational Merit (Scaled to Award Size)

Although APS awards are smaller than federal grants, reviewers still expect:

Clear objectives

Sound methods or activity plans

Feasibility within the proposed timeline and budget

For research grants, strong pilot-style projects or focused experiments perform best.

Predictor: Well-defined, realistic scope matched to APS funding levels.

5. Contribution to the APS Mission & Community

APS places strong value on:

Education and training

Outreach to growers, stakeholders, or students

Diversity, equity, and inclusion in plant pathology

Service to the plant pathology community

Predictor: Proposals that benefit the broader plant pathology community, not just the applicant.

6. Clear Outcomes & Impact

Successful applications explain:

What tangible outcomes will result (data, teaching modules, outreach events, training)

How the activity or research advances plant pathology knowledge or practice

How the funding enables participation (for travel awards)

Predictor: Clear, concrete deliverables and benefits.

7. Strong Mentor or Advisor Support (for Trainees)

For student and postdoctoral awards, reviewers expect:

Advisor endorsement

Evidence of mentorship and training value

Alignment with the trainee’s professional development

Predictor: A supportive mentor with a clear role in the applicant’s development.

8. Complete, Compliant, Well-Written Applications

APS applications are short but strict:

Word limits

Required letters

Membership verification

Clear budgets (where applicable)

Predictor: Clean, concise, fully compliant submissions.

🚫 Common Reasons APS Applications Are Not Funded

Weak or indirect connection to plant pathology

Applying to an award that doesn’t match career stage
