Purpose

The ANZSPED Research Grant Program supports high-quality research that advances clinical care and scientific knowledge in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes in Australia and New Zealand.

The program aims to support early-career investigators and encourage innovative clinical, translational, and basic science research that improves outcomes for children and adolescents.

Types of Research Supported

Funding

  1. Grant value is announced with each funding round.
  2. Funding must be used within 18 months of the award.
  3. Funds are paid to the recipient’s institution, not directly to the investigator.
  4. Ethics approval is not required at submission, but must be obtained within 6 months of the award before funding is released.

  2.
    1. Investigator salary support (up to NHMRC stipend level or equivalent)
    2. Research staff support
    3. Laboratory assays and consumables
    4. Data management or statistical support
    5. Registry access fees
    6. Participant reimbursements
  3. Funds cannot be used for:

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong relevance to pediatric endocrinology and diabetes

The most competitive proposals directly address:

  • type 1 diabetes,
  • pediatric obesity,
  • growth disorders,
  • adrenal disorders,
  • puberty disorders,
  • thyroid disease,
  • congenital endocrine disorders,
  • bone and metabolic disease,
  • pediatric endocrine genetics.

Clear alignment with pediatric endocrine health priorities is essential.

2. Clear child-health and clinical impact

ANZSPED reviewers strongly favor projects likely to:

  • improve pediatric outcomes,
  • optimize diabetes management,
  • improve early diagnosis,
  • reduce long-term complications,
  • improve quality of life,
  • strengthen transition-to-adult-care systems.

Applications with meaningful translational relevance tend to perform best.

3. Strong methodological rigor

Competitive proposals usually demonstrate:

  • robust clinical or translational study design,
  • realistic recruitment plans,
  • validated pediatric outcome measures,
  • appropriate statistics,
  • ethical pediatric research safeguards,
  • feasible timelines.

Weak methodology is a major reason for rejection.

4. Preliminary or pilot data

Successful applications frequently include:

  • pilot cohort data,
  • feasibility studies,
  • preliminary biomarker findings,
  • retrospective analyses,
  • proof-of-concept evidence,
  • prior related publications.

Preliminary evidence substantially improves reviewer confidence.

5. Multicenter and collaborative pediatric networks

High-scoring applications often involve:

  • multiple pediatric hospitals,
  • endocrine clinics,
  • diabetes networks,
  • translational laboratories,
  • epidemiologists,
  • geneticists,
  • dietitians and allied health teams.

Collaborative pediatric infrastructure is highly valued.

6. Strong mentorship and training environment

For trainee and early-career awards, reviewers heavily assess:

  • mentor expertise,
  • institutional support,
  • pediatric endocrine research environment,
  • protected research time,
  • career-development planning.

Strong mentorship is one of the strongest predictors of fellowship success.

7. Innovation balanced with feasibility

Competitive applications generally combine:

  • novel endocrine mechanisms,
  • diabetes technologies,
  • precision medicine,
  • digital health tools,
  • genomic approaches

with realistic implementation and achievable aims.

Overly ambitious proposals often score poorly.

8. Patient-centered and family-focused care relevance

Projects addressing:

  • patient engagement,
  • family-centered care,
  • adherence support,
  • psychosocial outcomes,
  • transition care,
  • health inequities

have become increasingly competitive.

9. Strong publication and academic productivity

Important predictors include:

  • peer-reviewed publications,
  • conference presentations,
  • prior endocrine research,
  • evidence of scholarly progression,
  • involvement in pediatric endocrine networks.

Trajectory and future potential are heavily weighted for junior investigators.

10. Potential for future larger funding

Reviewers favor projects likely to:

  • generate national grant applications,
  • support multicenter pediatric studies,
  • improve endocrine guidelines,
  • contribute to long-term pediatric endocrine research programs.

ANZSPED funding is often viewed as seed or developmental support.

Common Reasons for Rejection

Frequent reviewer concerns include:

  • weak pediatric relevance,
  • insufficient sample size,
  • poor statistical planning,
  • limited novelty,
  • inadequate feasibility evidence,
  • unrealistic recruitment goals,
  • weak translational significance,
  • lack of collaborative support.

  1. Applicants must:

    4. Propose a research project of relevance to children and adolescents under 20 years of age.
  2. The Principal Investigator (PI) must be:
    1. A current trainee in paediatric endocrinology, OR
    2. Within 10 years of completing paediatric endocrinology training, OR
    3. Within 10 years of completing a higher research degree (PhD/MD), OR
    4. A diabetes/endocrine nurse, allied health professional, or scientist working in paediatric endocrinology within the same timeframe.
  3. Career interruptions may be considered.
  4. Only one application per Principal Investigator per funding round is permitted.
  5. Applicants who have received an ANZSPED Research Grant within the previous two years are not eligible.
