An annual scholarship of $2,500 that funds services or accommodation for a library school student(s) with disabilities admitted to an ALA-accredited library school.
The scholarship will fund services or accommodations that are either not provided by law or otherwise by the university that will enable the student or students to successfully complete the course of study for a Master’s or Doctorate in Library Science and become a library or information studies professional.
You can apply for all ALA Scholarships through the single online application hosted by the ALA Scholarship Program. The scholarship process is open annually from September 1st - March 1st.
ALA’s competitive awards and grants — whether scholarships, travel/research funds, program support, or professional recognition — are typically evaluated for:
✔ 1. Clear Alignment with Library and Information Goals
Projects or applications must advance library services, information access, literacy, community engagement, or professional development — not just general education or unrelated institutional aims. Articulating how the proposed work supports ALA’s mission and the specific grant’s goals is essential. ala.org
✔ 2. Well-Defined Objectives and Outcomes
Successful applicants clearly describe specific aims, deliverables, timelines, metrics for success, and expected benefits to library users, staff or communities. Reviewers look for actionable plans with measurable results. ala.org
✔ 3. Community or Professional Impact
Grants that demonstrate direct relevance to underserved populations, broad community engagement, or significant professional development impact tend to score well in competitive review processes. This is especially true for program grants and humanities/community grants. ala.org
✔ 4. Relevance to Librarianship Practice and Research
For research-oriented awards (e.g., Carnegie-Whitney, travel/research fund grants), applications should address advancement of library science knowledge, resource guides or methodologies that improve information access or library services. ala.org
✔ 5. Demonstrated Feasibility and Support
Evidence of organizational backing (for program grants) or educational progress and membership (for scholarships) strengthens competitiveness. Budget realism and alignment with grant size/expectations are important. ala.org
✔ 6. Clear, Professional Communication
Well-written applications that directly answer prompts, adhere to guidelines, and present concise narratives with supporting documentation are more likely to succeed. ALA even offers guidance on how to write competitive grant applications. ala.org
✔ Start early — many ALA grants require advance preparation of narratives and budgets. ala.org
✔ Read eligibility criteria carefully — units and divisions within ALA often have separate deadlines and submission requirements. ala.org
✔ Demonstrate impact — link proposals to concrete benefits for library communities or the profession. ala.org
✔ Use ALA Apply — ALA’s grants management platform centralizes competitive applications for many programs. ala.org
