AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong cancer-specific scientific relevance

The most competitive applications directly address:

  • cancer biology
  • tumor evolution
  • precision oncology
  • cancer genomics
  • immunotherapy
  • targeted therapeutics
  • biomarker discovery
  • metastasis
  • early detection
  • cancer data science

MSK’s research portfolio is entirely cancer-focused, so clear oncology relevance is essential.

2. Clear translational impact

MSK strongly favors research that can move discoveries toward patients through:

  • new therapeutics
  • diagnostics
  • biomarker development
  • clinical trial translation
  • precision medicine implementation
  • improved cancer outcomes

Projects bridging laboratory discovery with clinical application tend to be highly competitive.

3. Innovation and high-risk/high-reward science

Successful applications often include:

  • novel biological mechanisms
  • innovative therapeutic platforms
  • AI in oncology
  • computational oncology
  • first-in-class drug concepts
  • advanced cancer technologies

MSK’s Starr Foundation Program for Discovery Science specifically funds “ambitious, highly creative” science.

4. Strong preliminary or proof-of-concept data

Competitive proposals usually include:

  • pilot mechanistic findings
  • translational feasibility data
  • preclinical therapeutic evidence
  • biomarker validation
  • early clinical datasets

Strong preliminary evidence significantly improves reviewer confidence.

5. Rigorous methodology and feasibility

High-scoring proposals generally demonstrate:

  • robust experimental or clinical design
  • realistic milestones
  • validated methods
  • strong statistical planning
  • reproducibility
  • feasible execution plan

Weak feasibility is a common reviewer concern.

6. Strong multidisciplinary collaboration

MSK strongly supports collaborative science involving:

  • medical oncologists
  • surgeons
  • computational biologists
  • immunologists
  • pathologists
  • radiologists
  • geneticists
  • bioinformaticians

Cross-disciplinary team science is a recurring feature of highly funded MSK projects.

7. Alignment with institutional strategic priorities

Applications aligned with MSK’s strategic strengths tend to perform especially well, including:

  • immuno-oncology
  • leukemia research
  • rare cancers
  • computational oncology
  • cancer genetics
  • cell therapy
  • translational therapeutics
  • AI-driven cancer research

Recent MSK fundraising and research initiatives highlight AI, computational oncology, and drug resistance as key focus areas.

8. Strong investigator track record

Important predictors include:

  • impactful oncology publications
  • prior grant success
  • translational research productivity
  • independent scientific contribution
  • national or international recognition

For early-career awards, future leadership trajectory is especially important.

9. Potential to generate future external funding

MSK pilot and internal awards often prioritize projects likely to:

  • secure NIH/NCI funding
  • generate SPORE or program-project grants
  • attract philanthropic support
  • launch multicenter studies
  • produce high-impact publications

MSK has extensive infrastructure dedicated to helping investigators build toward larger external grants.

10. Strong training and mentorship environment

For fellowships or pilot awards, reviewers often assess:

  • quality of mentorship
  • access to institutional resources
  • training environment
  • career-development plan
  • collaboration network

MSK offers dedicated internal grant support and global cancer research training programs for developing investigators.

Common Reasons for Rejection

Frequent reviewer concerns include:

  • insufficient innovation
  • weak translational pathway
  • unclear cancer relevance
  • limited preliminary evidence
  • poor feasibility
  • weak collaborative structure
  • inadequate statistical rigor
  • unclear future funding trajectory
