The AASM Foundation is committed to improving patient-centered diagnosis and care for all people with sleep disorders. To ensure that there is a continued advancement in effective diagnosis and care of people with sleep disorders, the AASM Foundation provides research funding through the Strategic Research Grant. This grant is investigator-initiated and supports high-impact research projects aimed at addressing gaps in knowledge that impact the ability to provide optimal, patient-centered, cost-effective diagnosis and care for people with sleep disorders.
Funding Information
The Strategic Research Grant program is organized into three categories to allow flexibility and a range of funding opportunities to potential applicants:
There are no restrictions on the distribution of expenses, however, indirect costs are capped at 8%. The grant is executed as a contract between the AASM Foundation and the grantee’s institution. A sample contract is available here.
This AASM Foundation research grant is supported by AASM Foundation general funds and the Hypersomnia Foundation.
First, some relevant features of AASM Foundation’s grant programs:
They fund career development, sleep and circadian science, clinical training, community initiatives.
They have specific grant types like Bridge to Success (for early-career investigators who applied for but did not get funded large federal/career development grants)
Also “Focused Projects Grant for Junior Investigators,” “Physician-Scientist Training Grant,” “Junior Faculty Grant,” etc.
They expect deliverables like publication, conference abstracts (e.g. submission to SLEEP meeting) in many cases.
From examining past AASM Foundation-funded projects (2020-2023, etc.), here are recurring predictors of success:
Early-/Junior-Career Status with Proposition for Independence
Many recipients are in early faculty or junior researcher roles. They often are transitioning toward independent research, or are trying to build up preliminary data for larger grants. For example, Bridge to Success grants are explicitly for those who applied for a federal K-award or equivalent but did not get funding.
Strong Mentorship & Institutional Support
Successful applications often show strong mentorship plans or backing by their institutions—this helps in applications for resubmissions, methods work, or clinical work. Having access to data sources or cohorts also appears beneficial. e.g. multiple projects using large cohorts, leveraging institutional registries or imaging labs.
Relevant, Often Translational or Mechanistic Sleep Science Questions
Grants often propose projects that are mechanistic (biomarkers, physiology, circadian rhythm), or translational (how sleep/circadian dysfunction relates to disease), or public health / population health oriented (health disparities, comorbidities). Eg: studies linking sleep to vascular inflammation or diet timing, or sleep fragmentation in Hispanic populations.
Well-Defined, Feasible Projects with Clear Deliverables
Projects tend to have clearly defined aims, often with measurable outcomes, and often plans for publication or presentation. Also, many grants are pilot or proof-of-concept / feasibility so that they can produce data to support larger future grants.
Bridge Funding / Resubmission Intent
AASM Foundation supports people who have tried obtaining larger external (often federal) funding and need resources to revise/resubmit. People who are in that “bridge” moment often are successful.
Focus on Sleep or Circadian Science with Health Relevance
The science tends to tie into human health outcomes: sleep apnea, metabolic disease, obesity, cardiovascular disease, mental health, risk in specific populations (pregnancy, pediatrics). Projects that address gaps or underserved populations also appear.
Use of Modern or Emerging Methodologies
Many grants use newer tools — e.g. actigraphy, machine learning, imaging, big datasets, circadian rhythm measurements (biomarkers), wearable technologies. Showing methodological sophistication helps.
Geographic & Community Health Relevance / Health Disparities
Some funded projects explicitly focus on sleep health in minority or underserved populations (Hispanics, immigrants, etc.), or on community outreach and sleep education or health equity.
Putting together the above, here are features you could build in to increase success chances:
Be early-career, or mid-career but with strong reasons for needing a bridge award (e.g. missed a federal funding cycle).
Show mentorship plan and institutional support (facilities, data, collaborator access).
Define a clear research question that is relevant to human sleep health or disease, and preferably translational.
Use modern tools / datasets / cohorts where possible.
If possible, align with health disparities or underserved communities (which seems increasingly emphasized).
Plan explicitly for deliverables — e.g. publications, abstracts, presentations.
If applying for a bridge grant, show how this grant will directly feed into improving and resubmitting a larger federal grant.
