The goal of this grant program is to provide competitive funding for clinical research that encourages the development of new therapies and treatment and adds to the understanding of the principles and practice of clinical toxicology. The intended research should advance the mission of the AACT to unite "scientists and clinicians in the advancement of research, education, prevention and treatment of diseases caused by chemicals, drugs and toxins." The project may be part of a larger project but must have a specific hypothesis and aims that are separate and distinct.
FUNDING INFORMATION AND APPLICATION DEADLINE
Application deadline: November 1 of every year
One grant, offered every year, of up to $5,000 is available to fund one study. An additional award of a maximum of $1000 will be provided for travel to the NACCT to present the results of the project. Grants are awarded to provide funding for specific projects that address clinical toxicology research and are not intended for long-term support of research programs.
Funds may not be applied to:
Funding is generally available for:
| Predictor | Why It Matters | Evidence / AACT Review Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Clear clinical relevance to toxicology | Projects must directly relate to clinical poisoning, overdose management, toxic exposures, antidotes, or toxicovigilance. Abstract toxicology or pharmacology topics score poorly. | AACT mission statement & funded project list. |
| Feasibility within small-scale budget and timeline | AACT funds short-term, pilot, or feasibility studies. Projects requiring large data collection or multicenter infrastructure are unlikely to be funded. | Grant program description: “Pilot projects likely to lead to extramural funding.” |
| Potential to produce publishable data or future funding | Reviewers prioritize proposals likely to yield tangible results and support future NIH/CDC/DoD applications. | AACT-FTER joint review criteria (2020–2024). |
| Strong study design and statistical plan | Even small projects must have a rigorous design — clear hypothesis, outcomes, and analysis method. | Review feedback for previous awardees. |
| Relevance to current toxicology priorities | Topics like opioids, synthetic drugs, envenomation, and emerging toxicants (PFAS, vaping, environmental toxins) are favored. | Recent funded project topics (2021–2024). |
| Early-career investigator involvement | AACT encourages mentorship and development of trainees. Strong mentor–mentee structure increases success chances. | FTER and Young Investigator program guidelines. |
| Collaborations with poison centers or hospitals | Projects involving clinical toxicology data networks, poison centers, or real-world case series are prioritized. | Historical grant recipient trends. |
| Institutional support and resources | Letters confirming access to data, labs, or collaborators strengthen the feasibility argument. | Application instructions. |
| Concise, well-written proposal | Word limits are strict (usually ≤3 pages). Reviewers reward clarity and precision. | AACT application format. |
Poor fit (e.g., general pharmacology or animal-only toxicology).
Overly ambitious scope for limited budget.
Vague hypotheses or no measurable outcomes.
Weak linkage to clinical application or human relevance.
Lack of mentor support (especially for fellows).
No clear plan for dissemination or next steps.
| Trend / Topic Area | Example or Note |
|---|---|
| Opioid toxicity and reversal agents | Naloxone distribution, synthetic opioid detection, withdrawal management. |
| Toxic alcohols and antidote efficacy | Ethylene glycol, fomepizole dosing, ICU outcomes. |
| Environmental and household exposures | PFAS, lead, pesticide-related hospital admissions. |
| Novel substances of abuse | Vaping liquids, kratom, synthetic cannabinoids. |
| Poison center data analysis | Retrospective studies using NPDS or regional databases. |
| Envenomation or antidote use | Snakebite and scorpion envenomation management. |
| Education and training research | Simulation-based toxicology teaching innovations. |
