The A. H. Couch Trust was established in November 1972 through the generosity of the late Arthur Herbert Couch. Earlier that year Arthur suffered a serious heart attack and was rushed into Auckland Hospital. He survived the experience thanks to the expert care he received, and with gratitude he decided to establish a fund providing financial support for a range of cardiology needs.
Fifty years on, the Heart Foundation and the A. H. Couch Trust are now working in partnership to support promising cardiology trainees and researchers to carry out cardiovascular research in New Zealand.
The scholarship is designed to support individuals who propose to engage in part-time (0.5FTE+) or full-time research, for between 6 months to 3 years. The Scholarship is for individuals planning to do cardiology research in NZ.
Scholarship funding
The remuneration for the A. H. Couch Trust Heart Foundation Scholarship will be a stipend of up to NZ$110,000 per annum for a full-time Scholar and up to NZ$10,000 per annum (plus GST, if applicable) towards tuition fees. Please note that the stipend for a part-time 0.5 FTE+ Scholar will be calculated pro-rata.
Competitive applications usually share these strengths:
✔ 1. Clear Cardiovascular Focus
Proposals must address heart disease mechanisms, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, or outcomes — and explicitly align with NZ health priorities. Projects without direct cardiac relevance are less competitive. Heart Foundation NZ
✔ 2. Strong Experimental or Analytical Plan
Reviewers look for:
Clear hypotheses and specific aims
Appropriate methods and statistical plans
Feasible deliverables within the funding period
✔ 3. Investigator & Team Capability
Experience, track record (publications, prior funding), and institutional support signal readiness to deliver. Collaborative, multidisciplinary teams often appeal to reviewers.
✔ 4. Value for Money & Feasibility
Especially for larger project grants, budgets should be tightly justified with realistic timelines and clear milestones.
✔ 5. Contribution to Building Evidence or Capacity
Proposals that generate data enabling larger national/international grants (e.g., HRC NZ, MBIE, Healthier Lives partners) or strengthen workforce capacity are highly viewed. Wikipedia
✔ Match funding type to career stage:
Early researchers: Postgraduate Scholarship, Small Project Grant
Postdocs or clinicians: Research or Overseas Training Fellowships
Established leaders: Senior Fellowship or Project Grant
✔ Engage stakeholders: Letters of support from departments or clinical partners strengthen credibility.
✔ Plan for ethics: Human and animal research must be ethically approved and compliant with NZ regulations. Heart Foundation NZ
✔ Articulate impact: Emphasise potential influence on practice, policy, or health outcomes in NZ.
